Elections – Voter Turnout Rises As Polling Begins In Asansol Region
Elections – Long lines formed early Thursday morning outside polling booths in Asansol as residents arrived in significant numbers to participate in the opening phase of the state assembly elections.

Strong Start To Polling Across Constituencies
Voting commenced at 7:00 am across several polling centers, with election officials reporting steady participation from the outset. Many voters were seen waiting patiently before polling stations opened, reflecting keen interest in the electoral process. Authorities indicated that the initial hours passed without disruption, setting a positive tone for the day.
Administrative Preparations In Place
Election officials had finalized arrangements well in advance to ensure that voting could proceed without obstacles. Aghore Kumar Roy, the Returning Officer for the Asansol Uttar constituency, confirmed that polling teams had been dispatched with all essential equipment and materials. He emphasized that the logistics were carefully coordinated to maintain efficiency at every stage of the process.
Roy stated that polling personnel reached their assigned locations on time, carrying voting machines and other necessary supplies. The goal, he explained, was to minimize delays and ensure that voters could cast their ballots smoothly.
Security Measures Strengthened
Security remained a central focus throughout the region. Central Armed Police Forces were deployed at each polling booth to maintain order and provide a safe environment for voters. Officials also introduced comprehensive surveillance measures, including webcasting facilities both inside and outside polling stations.
According to Roy, all 3,313 polling booths in the Asansol area were equipped with uninterrupted monitoring systems. These arrangements were designed to ensure transparency and discourage any irregularities during the voting process.
Parallel Voting Activity In Birbhum
Similar scenes were reported in parts of Birbhum, where polling also began on schedule. Election authorities there confirmed that preparations mirrored those in Asansol, with adequate staffing, security, and technical support in place. Early reports suggested that voter turnout in these areas was also encouraging.
Political Stakes Remain High
The ongoing election is expected to be closely contested. The ruling Trinamool Congress is seeking another term in office, while the Bharatiya Janata Party is aiming to expand its presence after gaining momentum in previous elections. The competition between the two parties has intensified political activity across the state.
A total of 294 assembly seats are being contested in West Bengal. The Election Commission of India has divided the election into phases to ensure orderly conduct. The first phase includes 152 constituencies, while the remaining 142 seats will go to polls in the next phase.
Large Number Of Candidates In Fray
This phase of the election features 1,478 candidates, reflecting a diverse and competitive political landscape. With multiple parties and independent candidates contesting, voters have a wide range of choices.
Election officials noted that managing such a large number of candidates requires careful coordination, particularly in terms of ballot arrangements and monitoring procedures.
Counting Scheduled For Early May
The counting of votes is set to take place on May 4, when the final results will determine the composition of the next state government. Until then, authorities will continue to oversee the remaining phases of polling with similar levels of preparedness and security.
