WomenSafety – Delhi Launches First Dedicated Police Station for Women’s Protection

WomenSafety –  Delhi has taken a significant step toward enhancing the safety and security of women with the inauguration of its first dedicated Women Police Station in the Subzi Mandi area of North Delhi. The new facility was formally opened on Thursday by Lieutenant Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu and has been established to exclusively deal with offences involving women and children within the North District.

Delhi first women police station for safety

The station has begun operating as a full-fledged police unit from June 19. Authorities confirmed that the existing Crime Against Women Cell of the North District has now been integrated into the newly created facility, allowing victims to access specialized services under one roof.

Dedicated Centre for Women and Child-Related Cases

The Women Police Station has been assigned the responsibility of handling a broad range of offences, including domestic violence, dowry-related harassment, sexual assault, stalking, molestation, rape, and other crimes affecting women and minors. Officials believe that concentrating these investigations within a dedicated unit will help improve responsiveness and ensure better support for victims.

During the inauguration ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Sandhu described the establishment of the station as an important development in the city’s efforts to strengthen public safety. He noted that the effectiveness of the initiative should not be judged solely by the number of cases registered or investigated, but by the confidence and trust it builds among women and girls seeking assistance.

Focus on Building Trust and Confidence

According to Sandhu, creating a secure environment is essential for enabling women to actively participate in education, employment, business activities, and public life. He emphasized that ensuring safety is not only the responsibility of law enforcement agencies but also requires active cooperation from society at large.

The Lieutenant Governor said that long-term progress can be achieved when communities work together to support women’s rights and security while encouraging victims to report crimes without fear or hesitation.

Victim-Friendly Infrastructure and Staffing

Designed with the needs of women and children in mind, the police station offers an environment intended to make complainants feel comfortable and supported. Officials stated that the facility has been structured to provide sensitive handling of cases and reduce the stress often associated with reporting crimes.

A majority of the personnel posted at the station are women police officers who have received specialized training to deal with victims in a professional and empathetic manner. Authorities expect this approach to encourage more survivors to come forward and seek legal assistance when needed.

Delhi Police Highlights Existing Safety Measures

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golchha outlined the force’s broader strategy for women’s safety, which is based on four key pillars: prevention, protection, prompt investigation, and public participation. He said that these measures are intended to create a comprehensive framework that addresses both crime prevention and victim support.

Golchha also highlighted several ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening women’s security across the capital. These include the deployment of 116 Pink Booths, all-women Police Control Room vehicles, and self-defence training programmes. According to police officials, these training efforts have already benefited more than three million women and girls in Delhi.

Model for Future Gender-Sensitive Policing

Officials believe the newly established Women Police Station can serve as a benchmark for gender-sensitive policing in the capital. By combining specialized investigation, trained personnel, and victim-focused services, the facility is expected to improve access to justice and strengthen confidence in the law enforcement system.

The initiative reflects Delhi’s continued efforts to develop safer public spaces and ensure that women and children receive timely support and protection when facing criminal offences.
