Elections – AAP Strengthens Urban Presence with Strong Punjab Civic Poll Results

Elections –  The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emerged as the clear frontrunner in Punjab’s municipal body elections, securing a commanding lead across urban local institutions and reinforcing its political influence in the state. Official figures released by the Punjab State Election Commission showed AAP winning 958 out of 1,977 wards, far ahead of its rivals.

Aap dominates punjab civic polls

The Congress party, despite being the state’s main opposition force, finished in second place with 397 wards. Other parties trailed behind, with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) winning 191 wards, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing 172, Independents claiming 251 seats, and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) taking seven wards.

Congress Struggles to Expand Urban Support

The election outcome highlighted the challenges Congress continues to face in rebuilding its urban voter base. Although the party has governed Punjab several times in the past and remains a significant political player, it was unable to match AAP’s performance in most municipal corporations and councils.

One of Congress’ better showings came in Kapurthala, where it captured 31 wards and established itself as the leading party. The party also registered some gains in select locations, including Chamkaur Sahib. However, these successes remained limited and did not translate into broader urban momentum across the state.

Disappointing Outcome in Key Political Territory

A notable setback for Congress came in Gidderbaha Municipal Council, a region often associated with Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. Out of 19 seats, Congress managed to win only two, while AAP secured the remaining 17, delivering a decisive result in an area considered politically important for the party.

Following the declaration of results, Raja Warring described the party’s overall performance as commendable but raised concerns regarding the election process. He alleged that a large number of nomination papers submitted by Congress candidates had been rejected, which he argued affected the final outcome.

Allegations Over Election Procedures

According to Warring, nearly 750 nomination applications linked to Congress candidates were disqualified during the electoral process. He claimed that several wards subsequently witnessed uncontested victories, benefiting ruling party candidates.

The Congress leader further alleged that government machinery was used unfairly during the campaign and accused the ruling establishment of employing various political tactics to influence the electoral contest. The party has indicated that it will continue to raise concerns about what it describes as procedural irregularities.

AAP Celebrates Public Endorsement

AAP leaders welcomed the results as a strong expression of public confidence in the state government. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the outcome reflected voter support for the administration’s work and argued that citizens had rejected divisive political narratives.

Mann also noted that AAP’s tally significantly exceeded the combined performance of Congress, BJP, and SAD. During initial result announcements, he expressed confidence that the party’s total would eventually surpass the 1,000-seat mark as remaining results were finalized.

Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia echoed the party’s position, stating that the verdict demonstrated public backing for AAP’s governance approach. He also criticized opposition parties while highlighting the scale of AAP’s success across urban Punjab.

Large-Scale Electoral Exercise

Voting for 75 Municipal Councils and 20 Nagar Panchayats took place on May 26. The elections witnessed participation from 7,555 candidates across Punjab. AAP fielded 1,801 candidates, while Congress nominated 1,550. BJP entered 1,316 candidates, and Shiromani Akali Dal contested with 1,251 candidates.

The final results underline AAP’s growing influence in Punjab’s urban political landscape while emphasizing the continuing challenges facing Congress as it attempts to regain lost ground. At the same time, the opposition party’s allegations regarding the conduct of the elections are likely to remain part of the political debate in the coming weeks.
