Senior BJP Leaders Attend Swearing-In Ceremony

The oath-taking ceremony drew the presence of several prominent national leaders from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the event alongside Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan. Chief Ministers from multiple BJP-ruled states, including Himanta Biswa Sarma, Manik Saha and Pushkar Singh Dhami, were also present during the ceremony.

The event marked a historic moment for the BJP in West Bengal, where the party succeeded in ending the long-standing rule of the Trinamool Congress after more than a decade in power.

BJP Legislature Party Selects Adhikari as Leader

Before taking oath, Suvendu Adhikari was unanimously chosen as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party. Senior party leaders congratulated him after the announcement, expressing confidence in his leadership as the state enters a new political phase.

The BJP’s decisive performance in the Assembly elections paved the way for the leadership change. According to the final election figures, the party secured more than 200 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while the Trinamool Congress faced a significant setback.

Victories in Bhabanipur and Nandigram Gain Attention

Suvendu Adhikari’s electoral performance became one of the most closely watched developments during the counting process. He registered victories in both the Bhabanipur and Nandigram Assembly constituencies, strengthening his position within the party.

In Bhabanipur, Adhikari defeated outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a margin exceeding 15,000 votes after the final round of counting, according to Election Commission data.

He also emerged victorious in Nandigram, a constituency that has remained politically significant in West Bengal over recent years. Official election figures showed Adhikari receiving more than 1.27 lakh votes by the end of the final counting round.

Record Voter Participation in State Elections

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections also recorded exceptionally high voter participation across multiple phases. Election authorities reported polling percentages crossing 90 percent in several constituencies, making it one of the highest voter turnouts seen in the state since independence.

Phase-wise turnout figures reflected strong public engagement in the electoral process. Combined polling percentages remained above 92 percent after the completion of the initial phases, highlighting intense voter interest in the high-stakes election.

Political Shift Reshapes West Bengal

The election outcome represents one of the biggest political changes in West Bengal in recent decades. The BJP’s rise to power has ended the Trinamool Congress government’s 15-year tenure in the state.

Political observers believe the results could significantly influence future regional and national political strategies, especially with the BJP now establishing a stronger presence in eastern India. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress is expected to reassess its organisational structure and electoral approach after the sharp decline in seat numbers.
