Election Commission Orders Complete Repoll

The Election Commission of India directed fresh polling in the entire 144-Falta Assembly constituency following allegations of major irregularities during the West Bengal Assembly elections held in April. The original voting took place in two phases on April 23 and April 29.

According to the Commission, reports received from several polling stations pointed toward serious violations affecting the fairness of the electoral process. Officials stated that the decision for a full repoll was taken after reviewing incidents described as severe electoral offences and actions that allegedly disrupted democratic procedures during polling on April 29.

Apart from Falta, repolling was also conducted earlier in selected booths of the Paschim Magrahat and Diamond Harbour constituencies.

TMC Candidate Withdraws From Contest

Ahead of the repoll, Trinamool Congress leader Jahangir Khan announced his withdrawal from the Falta election contest. Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, Khan said his decision was taken keeping peace and development in mind.

He described himself as someone closely connected to the people of Falta and said he wanted the constituency to remain peaceful and continue progressing. Khan also referred to a proposed development package for the area and expressed hope for a stronger future for the constituency.

When reporters questioned whether the move was influenced by the party leadership, Khan avoided directly addressing the matter. He maintained that his priority remained the welfare and stability of Falta.

Trinamool Congress Responds to Speculation

Soon after Khan’s announcement, the Trinamool Congress clarified that the decision to withdraw was entirely personal and not directed by the party. In its statement, the party also alleged that some of its workers in the constituency had faced pressure and intimidation following incidents of post-election violence reported in different parts of the state.

The party leadership did not announce any replacement candidate immediately after Khan’s withdrawal, keeping political observers focused on the impact the move could have on the final outcome of the constituency.

BJP Repeats Allegations of Poll Irregularities

The Bharatiya Janata Party had earlier raised strong objections regarding the conduct of polling in Falta. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda accused election authorities and rival political workers of allowing widespread irregularities at several booths during the original polling process.

Panda claimed that BJP representatives had formally demanded repolling in around 150 booths after alleged tampering incidents involving party symbols. He also alleged that surveillance cameras at certain polling stations were improperly handled during voting hours.

Speaking to media earlier this month, Panda expressed confidence that the BJP would secure a significant victory in the repoll. He maintained that public support in the constituency had increased following the controversy surrounding the earlier phase of voting.

BJP Forms Government in West Bengal

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections resulted in a major victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which won 207 seats and formed its first government in the state. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as Chief Minister after the party secured a clear majority in the Assembly.

Political analysts believe the developments in Falta have become one of the most closely watched episodes of the state election due to the scale of the repoll and the allegations raised by rival parties.
