Election – Congress Sees Strong Support in Bagalkot By-Election Race
Election – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday voiced confidence that the Congress party is witnessing strong public backing in the Bagalkot Assembly constituency as preparations intensify for the upcoming by-election. Speaking at a campaign gathering in Mugalkolli village, he indicated that the party’s outreach efforts have been met with a positive response from voters across the region.

Tribute to Late Leader HY Meti
During his address, the Chief Minister paid tribute to late MLA HY Meti, whose passing led to the need for the by-election. Siddaramaiah described Meti as a widely respected and approachable figure who maintained goodwill across political and social groups. Referring to him as an individual who had no adversaries, he emphasized the lasting impact of Meti’s work in the constituency.
The Congress has nominated Meti’s son, Umesh Meti, as its candidate for the seat. Siddaramaiah expressed optimism that voters would extend their continued support to the family, recognizing the late leader’s contributions and legacy.
Positive Response During Campaign Trail
Highlighting his recent visits across Bagalkot, Siddaramaiah said that public interactions have reflected a sense of trust and goodwill toward the Congress party. According to him, people have shown enthusiasm and confidence in the party’s leadership and its governance record.
He noted that such feedback from ground-level campaigning has strengthened his belief that the party is well-positioned to secure victory in the by-election. The Chief Minister also stressed that the campaign has focused on connecting directly with voters and addressing their concerns.
BJP Criticism and Political Exchange
Responding to criticism from Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, who suggested that his extended presence in the constituency indicated concern about a possible defeat, Siddaramaiah dismissed these claims. He clarified that comparisons with earlier elections, particularly the Badami contest, were not relevant in the current context.
According to him, the present election is a by-poll with different dynamics, unlike a general election. He further accused the opposition of making such statements due to apprehension about losing ground in the constituency.
Campaign Plans Across Constituencies
The Chief Minister also outlined his campaign schedule, stating that he would spend four days in Bagalkot and an additional three days in Davanagere. He expressed confidence that Congress candidates would perform well in both constituencies.
Siddaramaiah reiterated that the party’s campaign strategy is focused on strengthening voter outreach and ensuring that key issues are communicated effectively to the public.
By-Election Schedule Announced
The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for by-elections across eight Assembly constituencies in six states. These include Ponda in Goa, Umreth in Gujarat, Bagalkot and Davanagere South in Karnataka, Rahuri and Baramati in Maharashtra, Dharmanagar in Tripura, and Koridang in Nagaland.
Polling for these constituencies is set to take place on April 23, 2026. The counting of votes will be conducted on May 4, 2026, with results expected to be declared on the same day.
Focus on Voter Participation
As the election date approaches, political parties are intensifying their campaigns to connect with voters and highlight their agendas. The Bagalkot by-election, in particular, has drawn attention due to the legacy factor associated with the late MLA and the active involvement of senior leaders in campaigning.
With multiple constituencies heading to polls, the upcoming by-elections are expected to serve as an important indicator of political trends in the respective states.
