Education Updates – Delhi Schools Plan Summer Break With Special Study Sessions

Education Updates –  The Delhi government has declared summer vacations for all government-run schools in the national capital from May 11 to June 30. Alongside the holiday announcement, the Directorate of Education has also introduced special remedial classes for students of Classes 9, 10, and 12 to strengthen academic performance ahead of the new session.

Remedial Classes Scheduled for Senior Students

According to official instructions issued by the education department, the additional classes will be organised between May 11 and May 23. These sessions are intended to support students who may require extra academic guidance, especially in core subjects and conceptual learning.

Schools have been asked to conduct the classes depending on the availability of teachers and infrastructure facilities. The move is aimed at improving learning outcomes and helping students prepare better for upcoming examinations.

Focus on Mathematics and Science

The remedial sessions will take place from 7:30 am to 10:30 am each day, with every class lasting one hour. For students of Classes 9 and 10, schools have primarily been instructed to focus on mathematics and science subjects.

However, school heads have also been given flexibility to add other subjects if needed. The decision can be taken based on student performance, previous examination results, and teacher availability.

For Class 12 students, schools will independently decide which subjects require additional attention, depending on the academic needs of students.

Attendance and Uniform Rules Introduced

The Directorate of Education has directed schools to ensure proper attendance monitoring during these sessions. Attendance records will be maintained online, while students attending the classes will be required to wear their regular school uniforms.

Schools have also been instructed to obtain consent from parents before students participate in the extra academic sessions. Officials stated that this measure is intended to maintain transparency and ensure student safety during the vacation period.

Schools Asked to Maintain Basic Facilities

Apart from classroom teaching, libraries in schools will remain functional during the remedial program. Authorities have also instructed school administrations to make arrangements for clean drinking water and other essential facilities on campus during the summer heat.

In situations where regular teaching staff may not be available, schools have been permitted to appoint guest or contractual teachers to continue the academic support program smoothly.

Sudden Announcement Creates Concerns

The decision, however, has led to concerns among sections of teachers and parents because the directive was issued shortly before schools closed for the summer break. Many students, especially those belonging to migrant families, had already planned travel to their hometowns during the holidays.

School principals reportedly informed parents and students through WhatsApp messages after receiving the official circular, leaving limited time for families to change their travel schedules or make new arrangements.

Teachers Raise Questions Over Planning

Several teachers have also pointed out that the timing of the remedial classes overlaps with ongoing census-related duties assigned to educators. A significant number of government school teachers are currently involved in census training activities, while house listing work is expected to begin from May 16.

Ajay Veer Yadav, General Secretary of the Government School Teachers Association, said academic initiatives of this scale should ideally be included in the annual academic calendar for smoother execution. He noted that without adequate preparation and advance planning, such programs often face implementation challenges.

Teachers associated with census responsibilities have additionally expressed concerns about managing both assignments simultaneously, raising questions about workload and scheduling coordination.
