Dr. Patil, who was born on October 22, 1935, in Ambap village of Kolhapur district, built a remarkable legacy through his work in higher education and institution building. Although he began his public life with the Congress party and later held several constitutional positions, including Governor of Tripura, Bihar, and West Bengal, he gradually shifted his focus toward expanding educational opportunities. Over the years, he established a wide network of schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, and medical institutions across Maharashtra and several other states, benefiting countless students and families.

Chief Minister Highlights Lifelong Public Service

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described Dr. Patil’s journey as an inspiring story of commitment and determination. He noted that Dr. Patil rose from grassroots public service to occupy key constitutional offices while continuing to work for the welfare of ordinary citizens. According to the Chief Minister, his efforts significantly expanded access to education for students from economically weaker sections and helped strengthen healthcare services through the institutions he created.

Fadnavis also acknowledged Dr. Patil’s contribution to sports infrastructure, particularly the development of an internationally recognized sports complex in Navi Mumbai. He added that the Padma Shri recipient’s work extended beyond education into agriculture and social development, leaving behind a lasting impact on multiple sectors.

National Leaders Remember His Educational Vision

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said the country had lost a visionary whose lifelong commitment to education and public welfare transformed millions of lives. He noted that Dr. Patil remained devoted to the principles of public service throughout his career and earned respect across political affiliations through his humility and dedication.

Kharge further said that the institutions established by Dr. Patil provided opportunities to generations of students who might otherwise have struggled to access quality education. His initiatives in healthcare, sports, and community development, he added, created lasting social value that would continue to benefit future generations.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also expressed sorrow over the veteran educationist’s demise. He said Dr. Patil’s contribution to education and public life would always be remembered and extended condolences to his family, supporters, and well-wishers during this difficult time.

Leaders Across Parties Recall Lasting Contributions

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) president Sharad Pawar remembered Dr. Patil as a visionary who combined educational excellence with social responsibility. He said his work in education, healthcare, sports, and public welfare would continue to inspire future generations and described his passing as a major loss for Maharashtra.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray called Dr. Patil a pillar of Maharashtra’s education system rather than simply a public figure. He recalled his long association with public life, his tenure as Governor, and the strong relationships he maintained across political lines. Thackeray also remembered the warmth Dr. Patil shared with the Thackeray family over several decades.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde praised Dr. Patil’s efforts to transform education and healthcare, saying his vision reshaped the academic landscape of Maharashtra. He described the loss as deeply felt by both the educational community and society at large.

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar said Dr. Patil firmly believed education was the strongest tool for social transformation. She noted that through universities and professional institutions in medicine, engineering, and other fields, he helped shape the future of millions of students. She also highlighted his constitutional service as Governor of Tripura, Bihar, and West Bengal, saying he carried out his responsibilities with dignity while remaining committed to public welfare.

Dr. D.Y. Patil’s legacy continues through the institutions he established and the opportunities they provide to students across India. His contribution to education, healthcare, and community development remains one of the most significant achievements in Maharashtra’s modern history.
