Although he began his public life with the Congress party and later held several constitutional positions, including Governor of Tripura, Bihar, and West Bengal, he gradually shifted his focus toward expanding educational opportunities. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described Dr. Patil’s journey as an inspiring story of commitment and determination. He noted that Dr. Patil rose from grassroots public service to occupy key constitutional offices while continuing to work for the welfare of ordinary citizens. According to the Chief Minister, his efforts significantly expanded access to education for students from economically weaker sections and helped strengthen healthcare services through the institutions he created.
Fadnavis also acknowledged Dr. Patil’s contribution to sports infrastructure, particularly the development of an internationally recognized sports complex in Navi Mumbai.
