Politics – Political tensions in Andhra Pradesh resurfaced after recent violence in Alur Assembly constituency, with police stating that the situation has now stabilized while the investigation continues.
The Alur Assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district returned to normal on Monday, two days after violent confrontations between supporters of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in Nemakal village of Chippagiri mandal. The clashes resulted in the arrest of Alur MLA B. Virupakshi along with several others, turning the incident into a major political issue in the region. Authorities confirmed that peace has been restored in the affected villages, although the investigation into the violence remains active.
Police Maintain Peace in the Affected Area
According to local police officials, security has been strengthened in Nemakal and nearby villages to prevent any further disturbances. Alur Circle Inspector Ravishankar Reddy said sufficient police personnel have been deployed across sensitive locations, adding that there is currently no law and order concern. He noted that the atmosphere remains peaceful and residents have resumed their normal routines while investigators continue collecting evidence related to the clashes.
Police have not issued any detailed statement regarding the arrest of the sitting MLA. However, officials confirmed that Virupakshi has been remanded to judicial custody and is currently lodged in Kurnool District Jail.
Arrest of Sitting MLA Draws Political Attention
The arrest has attracted considerable attention across Andhra Pradesh, with political observers describing it as an unusual development for the erstwhile Kurnool district. Leaders from multiple political backgrounds have noted that it is rare for a serving legislator from the region to be arrested and remanded in connection with allegations linked to political violence.
The development has intensified the political debate between the ruling and opposition parties, with both sides presenting conflicting accounts of what led to the clashes in Nemakal village.
YSRCP Leaders Extend Support to Virupakshi
Senior YSRCP leader and former MLA Katasani Rambhupal Reddy, accompanied by several party leaders, visited Kurnool District Jail on Monday to meet Virupakshi. During the visit, they enquired about his well-being and expressed support for the legislator.
The YSRCP leadership alleged that the cases registered against Virupakshi and other party members were politically motivated. Party representatives claimed that false allegations had been made against their leaders and demanded that the investigation be conducted fairly and without political influence.
TDP Leaders Meet Residents After the Clashes
Meanwhile, senior TDP leaders toured Chippagiri and Nemakal villages to interact with families affected by the violence. The delegation included Kurnool district president Gudise Krishnamma, MLC B.T. Naidu and MLA Kalva Srinivasulu, who assured local residents that their concerns would be taken up with the authorities.
Later, while addressing the media in Kurnool, TDP leaders strongly criticized the alleged attacks on members of the Yadava and Dalit communities during the unrest. DCMS Chairman and BC Welfare Association State President Y. Nageswara Rao Yadav called for strict legal action against those responsible, alleging that members of weaker sections had been targeted during the incident.
TDP representatives also renewed their criticism of the previous YSRCP government, accusing it of failing to protect the interests of backward classes and socially weaker communities during its tenure. On the other hand, YSRCP leaders rejected these allegations and continued to question the circumstances surrounding the arrests.
As political exchanges continue, law enforcement authorities have emphasized that maintaining peace remains their priority. Officials said the investigation will proceed according to legal procedures, and further action will depend on the evidence gathered during the inquiry.
