Defections – Congress Alleges Political Poaching Amid Opposition Turmoil
Defections – A fresh political confrontation unfolded on Wednesday as the Congress accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of encouraging defections from opposition parties and attempting to weaken rivals through political inducements. The allegations were directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with the Congress claiming that elected representatives who secured victories on anti-BJP platforms were being persuaded to switch sides.

Congress Targets Home Minister Over Alleged Strategy
Congress general secretary for communications Jairam Ramesh alleged that efforts were underway to draw opposition leaders into the BJP fold. According to him, these developments reflected a broader political strategy aimed at strengthening the ruling party by attracting lawmakers from rival camps.
Ramesh argued that the campaign was being carried out systematically and suggested that various incentives were being offered to political figures based on their individual circumstances. He claimed that such moves were intended to offset political challenges faced by the BJP earlier in the year and described the alleged efforts as an attack on democratic values.
The Congress leader further stated that despite these attempts, the opposition would continue to resist what he described as efforts to undermine political diversity and democratic competition.
Maharashtra Speculation Fuels Political Debate
The remarks from Congress came at a time when speculation has intensified regarding possible divisions within the Shiv Sena (UBT) in Maharashtra. Reports of dissatisfaction among certain party members have fueled discussions about a potential split within the Uddhav Thackeray-led outfit.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut added to the controversy by alleging that attempts were being made to influence lawmakers from Maharashtra. In a social media post, he claimed that large sums of money were being used in efforts to secure political support, calling the alleged practice both disturbing and unacceptable.
Although no official confirmation has emerged regarding any such transactions, the allegations have further heightened tensions within the state’s political landscape.
Questions Raised Over Parliamentary Developments
Political observers have also focused on recent developments involving Shiv Sena (UBT) lawmakers. Speculation increased after reports suggested that a section of the party’s Lok Sabha members could consider forming a separate group.
Attention turned to Raut’s visit to New Delhi, which triggered discussions about whether he might engage with parliamentary authorities to address any potential move by dissident MPs seeking independent recognition within Parliament. However, no formal announcement regarding such a development has been made.
TMC Faces Internal Challenge
Meanwhile, political realignments have also emerged within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). A group of rebel TMC MPs recently met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and announced their decision to merge with the National Congress of Progressive India (NCPI), a registered political party based in Tripura.
One of the rebel lawmakers stated that the faction intended to pursue reforms within the political framework and would seek control over the party symbol. The development has sparked a fresh dispute within the TMC, which has strongly opposed the move.
Anti-Defection Law Debate Continues
The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC has maintained that the merger is not legally valid and has argued that the anti-defection provisions should apply in the matter. The issue is expected to draw attention from constitutional and parliamentary experts as questions arise over the legality of the political shift.
The NCPI, though officially registered, remains an unrecognised political party with limited electoral influence. Nevertheless, its emergence in the current political developments has added another dimension to the ongoing debate over party loyalty, defections, and the future shape of opposition politics in Indi
