DefectionPolitics – Chidambaram Targets BJP Over Growing Political Realignments
DefectionPolitics – Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over a series of political realignments witnessed across several opposition parties, alleging that what is popularly referred to as “Operation Lotus” continues to influence the country’s political landscape. The former Union Finance Minister expressed his views through a social media post, linking recent developments in multiple parties to a broader pattern of political defections.

Chidambaram Raises Concerns Over Party Splits
In his remarks, Chidambaram claimed that several regional and national political parties have experienced internal divisions in recent months. He cited the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Trinamool Congress, and Shiv Sena (UBT) as examples of organizations that have faced significant fractures. According to him, these developments point to an aggressive phase of political maneuvering that has reshaped party equations in different parts of the country.
The Congress veteran also questioned the effectiveness of constitutional safeguards designed to discourage defections, arguing that existing mechanisms have failed to respond adequately to the changing political situation.
Debate Over Anti-Defection Provisions
Referring to the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, Chidambaram stated that the anti-defection framework has not played an active role in addressing recent shifts in political loyalties. The constitutional provision was introduced to discourage elected representatives from changing parties after being elected and allows for disqualification under specific circumstances.
His comments have renewed discussion around whether the current anti-defection law remains effective in dealing with modern political challenges, particularly when groups of lawmakers move together or seek recognition under different political formations.
Shiv Sena (UBT) Faces Major Setback
The criticism comes shortly after a significant development within Shiv Sena (UBT). Six of the party’s Lok Sabha members joined the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday.
The MPs who switched sides include Sanjay Haribhau Jadhav, Bhausaheb Rajaram Wakchaure, Omprakash Bhupalsingh Nimbalkar, Sanjay Dina Patil, Sanjay Uttamrao Deshmukh, and Nagesh Bapurao Patil Ashtikar. Their move followed disciplinary action initiated by Shiv Sena (UBT), which had objected to their absence from a parliamentary party meeting.
The development has further intensified the political rivalry between the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, a contest that has remained central to Maharashtra politics over the past few years.
Trinamool Congress Confronts Internal Turbulence
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress is also dealing with challenges from within its ranks. A group of 20 Members of Parliament reportedly informed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla that they had merged with the National Citizens Party of India and requested separate seating arrangements in Parliament.
In response, the Trinamool Congress has sought the disqualification of the lawmakers, arguing that their actions violate established parliamentary and constitutional norms. The matter is expected to draw attention as procedural and legal questions surrounding the merger are examined.
Earlier Shift Involving AAP Members
Political realignments have not been limited to a single party. Earlier, seven Aam Aadmi Party parliamentarians in the Rajya Sabha merged with the BJP, adding to the ongoing debate over defections and the stability of opposition parties.
With multiple parties witnessing internal divisions and lawmakers changing political affiliations, discussions surrounding the anti-defection law and its implementation are likely to remain a significant issue in the national political discourse.
