Covid-19 – Andhra Pradesh Strengthens Health Preparedness After Detection of RF.5 Variant
Covid-19 –The Andhra Pradesh Health Department has intensified monitoring and preparedness measures across all districts following the detection of the Omicron RF.5 subvariant in recent Covid-19 samples. Although the number of infections remains low and scattered, officials have instructed district administrations to strengthen disease surveillance, review emergency response plans, and ensure that hospitals are fully equipped to handle any change in the situation. Authorities have also confirmed four Covid-related deaths, noting that each patient had severe underlying medical conditions that significantly increased health risks.

RF.5 Variant Confirmed Through Genome Sequencing
The latest development comes after positive samples collected from Kadapa district were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for genome sequencing. The laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of the Omicron RF.5 subvariant. Following the report, Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav reviewed the state’s preparedness with senior health officials through a teleconference before issuing directions to reinforce monitoring and response systems.
According to Director of Medical Education Dr. Vishnuvardhan, RF.5 is a naturally evolving branch of the Omicron family and is not considered a recombinant strain. He explained that global scientific evidence has not shown the variant to cause more severe illness than previous Omicron lineages. While the strain has been identified in countries across Southeast Asia, including Singapore, it continues to remain under routine observation by international health agencies.
Experts Urge Vigilance Without Panic
Medical experts have advised the public to remain cautious while avoiding unnecessary fear. Doctors say the symptoms linked to the RF.5 variant continue to resemble those seen with earlier Omicron infections, including sore throat, cough, fever, headache, fatigue, body pain, and nasal congestion.
Dr. S. Bala Raju, President of the Indian Medical Association’s Andhra Pradesh chapter, said that the current infections generally remain mild among healthy individuals. However, he stressed that elderly people and patients living with chronic illnesses such as kidney disease, heart disorders, asthma, tuberculosis, diabetes, and other serious medical conditions should exercise greater caution, as they remain more vulnerable to complications.
Health Advice Focuses on Prevention and Recovery
Doctors have encouraged residents to continue following basic preventive measures, including wearing face masks in crowded places, maintaining isolation when symptoms appear, and limiting unnecessary travel during illness. For patients experiencing fever, standard medication such as Paracetamol may be used under medical guidance for symptom relief.
Experts also highlighted the importance of supporting immunity during seasonal weather changes. They recommended staying hydrated with warm fluids, consuming nutritious meals, and maintaining a balanced diet. Warm soups, green tea, and turmeric milk were suggested as supportive dietary choices during recovery, while chilled drinks and heavily processed foods should be avoided to reduce irritation of the respiratory tract.
State Reports Limited Cases Across Multiple Districts
Health Secretary G. Veerapandian said that Andhra Pradesh recorded 12 Covid-19 cases between June 26 and July 16. Of these, eight cases were reported from Kadapa, two from Guntur, and one each from Visakhapatnam and Kakinada. Officials noted that infections have appeared in different regions without forming any localized clusters.
The four reported deaths included three patients from Kadapa and one from Kakinada. According to the Health Department, all four individuals had serious pre-existing illnesses, including hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease, and other long-term health complications.
At present, three patients remain in home isolation, two are receiving hospital treatment, and three have recovered and been discharged.
Preparedness Measures Expanded Across Andhra Pradesh
The Health Department stated that district administrations were formally alerted on July 10 to strengthen Covid-19 preparedness. A statewide review meeting involving Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme teams and sanitation officials was later conducted to coordinate monitoring and response efforts.
Rapid Response Teams continue to monitor disease trends and carry out community surveillance. Public awareness campaigns are also being expanded to encourage timely reporting of symptoms and adherence to preventive practices.
To ensure readiness, authorities have increased supplies of RT-PCR testing kits, rapid diagnostic tests, personal protective equipment, medicines, and other essential medical resources across primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare facilities. Officials said these steps are intended to maintain adequate capacity should the number of infections increase in the coming weeks.
