Corruption Case – Former West Bengal legislator and Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation councillor Sabyasachi Dutta was taken into custody by police during the early hours of Tuesday in connection with allegations of corruption, extortion, and intimidation. Arrest Follows Businessman’s Complaint

According to sources familiar with the matter, the complaint was filed by a businessman from Salt Lake, located on the northern edge of Kolkata. Based on the allegations, officers from Bidhannagar North Police Station initiated an operation and reached Dutta’s residence in the Raigachi area of Rajarhat shortly after midnight on Monday.

Police personnel reportedly questioned the former MLA for several hours before formally placing him under arrest early Tuesday morning. Officials have not disclosed the complete details of the interrogation but indicated that the action was taken after gathering preliminary information related to the complaint.

Multiple Allegations Under Examination

Investigators are also examining several earlier accusations linked to Dutta. These allegations reportedly include claims of corruption, extortion activities, and the use of threats against local residents. Authorities are expected to review both recent and past complaints as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Law enforcement officials have not yet released detailed evidence connected to the charges. However, sources indicate that investigators are looking into multiple aspects of the allegations to determine the extent of any wrongdoing.

Political Journey Marked by Party Changes

Sabyasachi Dutta served as the elected representative from the Rajarhat-Newtown Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district for two consecutive terms between 2011 and 2021. He also held the position of chairman of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation during his political career.

Before the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, Dutta left the Trinamool Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He subsequently contested the Bidhannagar Assembly seat as a BJP candidate but was unsuccessful in securing victory.

The election was won by Sujit Bose, a senior Trinamool Congress leader and former state Fire Services Minister. Bose has also been in the spotlight recently after being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the alleged cash-for-municipal jobs recruitment case in West Bengal.

Return to Trinamool Congress

Following the 2021 Assembly elections, in which the Trinamool Congress secured another term in power, Dutta ended his association with the BJP and returned to the ruling party.

In the most recent Assembly election, which brought an end to the Trinamool Congress government’s 15-year tenure in the state, Dutta contested from the Barasat Assembly constituency. However, he was unable to win the seat.

Court Proceedings Expected Soon

Officials from Bidhannagar City Police stated that Dutta will undergo a mandatory medical examination before being produced before a district court in North 24 Parganas. Prosecutors are expected to request judicial custody during the court proceedings.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further legal action will depend on the findings gathered during the course of the probe.
