These concerns formed the backdrop of the Climate Innovation Summit 2026, hosted at IIM Bangalore. The event brought together experts from government, research institutions, industry, and environmental organizations to exchange ideas on building long-term resilience against climate-related risks. Among the keynote speakers was Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, whose recent journey to the International Space Station offered a unique perspective on sustainability and resource management.
Before addressing delegates, Shukla participated in a tree-planting activity, symbolizing the importance of environmental stewardship. The gesture reflected the broader message of the summit, emphasizing that meaningful climate action often begins with simple, practical steps taken by individuals and communities.
Lessons From Life Aboard the International Space Station
Drawing from his experience during a mission that lasted 20 days, 2 hours, and 59 minutes, Shukla described how astronauts depend on careful resource management to survive in space. During his stay on the International Space Station, he took part in more than 60 experiments conducted in microgravity, gaining firsthand insight into systems designed to maximize efficiency.
He explained that resources aboard the station are continuously recycled and reused, leaving little room for waste. Illustrating the concept, he noted that materials consumed one day often become part of the resources available the next. His observations highlighted a striking contrast with consumption patterns commonly seen on Earth, where waste remains a significant environmental concern.
Space Exploration and Sustainable Innovation
According to Shukla, the pursuit of space exploration has consistently encouraged advances in technology, engineering, and resource optimization. He emphasized that many of the lessons learned through space missions can help societies develop more sustainable practices on Earth.
The astronaut stressed that efficient use of resources is no longer simply an environmental objective but a necessity for ensuring long-term well-being. Innovations developed for space missions, he suggested, can inspire solutions to some of the environmental challenges facing modern societies.
A Powerful Reflection on Earth’s Uniqueness
One of the most impactful moments of his address came when he reflected on viewing Earth from orbit. Looking at the planet from nearly 400 kilometers above its surface, he said the experience reinforced how rare and valuable Earth truly is.
Shukla urged people to recognize the importance of protecting natural resources for future generations. He observed that while humanity continues to search for opportunities beyond Earth, the planet itself remains an extraordinary place capable of supporting life and deserves greater care and respect.
Recognition for Citizen-Led Environmental Efforts
During his speech, Shukla also acknowledged the Green India Challenge, an environmental campaign led by Igniting Minds Organisation. The initiative has encouraged large-scale public participation in tree plantation efforts, resulting in more than 196 million trees being planted and involvement from over 44 million citizens across the country.
He described the movement as a strong example of how grassroots participation can contribute to broader environmental objectives. Community-driven efforts, he said, play a vital role in restoring ecological balance and supporting conservation initiatives.

A recurring message throughout the summit was that environmental protection cannot be achieved by governments and institutions alone. Speakers emphasized that conserving water, reducing waste, preserving forests, and restoring ecosystems require active participation from individuals at every level of society.
