Climate – Andhra Pradesh Steps Up Preparedness as Rainfall Deficit Raises Concerns Across State
Climate – The Andhra Pradesh government has intensified its preparedness measures as a significant shortfall in rainfall, coupled with the impact of El Niño conditions, continues to pose challenges across the state. Senior officials have been instructed to work in close coordination to reduce the effects of the dry spell and protect the livelihoods of people dependent on agriculture, horticulture, livestock, and fisheries. During a high-level review meeting, Chief Secretary G Sai Prasad emphasized that safeguarding farmers and rural communities remains one of the government’s foremost responsibilities.

Rainfall Deficit Triggers Statewide Response
Officials informed the review meeting that Andhra Pradesh recorded a rainfall deficit of 48.3 percent between June 1 and July 15. The shortage has affected almost the entire state, with 24 out of the 28 districts experiencing below-normal rainfall. The remaining four districts are also facing deficient rainfall conditions, highlighting the widespread nature of the weather challenge.
In response, the Chief Secretary directed District Collectors to closely monitor local conditions and ensure that contingency plans are implemented without delay. He stressed that regular coordination between district administrations and government departments would be essential to manage the evolving situation effectively.
Agriculture Department Focuses on Crop Protection
To reduce the risk of crop damage, the Agriculture Department has been asked to strengthen farmer support through scientific cultivation practices and timely advisories. Guidance will be shared regularly through Rythu Seva Kendras and official WhatsApp groups, allowing farmers to receive updated recommendations based on changing weather conditions.
Authorities are also encouraging cultivators to adopt alternative cropping patterns where necessary. Advance stocking of contingency seed varieties is being undertaken to ensure farmers have access to suitable options if weather conditions remain unfavorable. Officials further advised farmers to consider pre-monsoon dry sowing, natural farming methods, and crops that require comparatively less water.
Measures Planned for Horticulture Sector
Special attention is also being given to horticulture, which is particularly vulnerable to prolonged dry conditions and rising temperatures. The government plans to expand the use of drip irrigation systems, develop additional farm ponds, and encourage mulching techniques to conserve soil moisture.
Support measures will also include the installation of shade nets where appropriate and the supply of micronutrients to improve crop health. These initiatives are expected to benefit growers cultivating crops such as chilli, onion, vegetables, mango, citrus, and lemon by helping them cope with water scarcity during the current season.
Support for Livestock and Fisheries
The Animal Husbandry Department has been instructed to ensure adequate supplies of fodder and drinking water for livestock. Plans are also in place to establish cattle camps wherever required so that animals receive proper care during extended dry spells. Officials have additionally been directed to discourage distress sales of livestock by providing timely assistance to affected farmers.
Meanwhile, the Fisheries Department will closely monitor aquaculture activities across the state. Scientific guidance will be provided to fish farmers to help them manage changing environmental conditions and reduce potential losses in ponds and other aquaculture systems.
Government Calls for Coordinated Action
Chief Secretary G Sai Prasad noted that El Niño conditions could continue for the coming months, making it important for every department to remain alert and proactive. He urged officials at both the state and district levels to work together in implementing preventive measures aimed at reducing economic losses and improving resilience.
The government believes that early planning, scientific support, and coordinated execution will play a key role in protecting agricultural production and sustaining rural livelihoods as Andhra Pradesh continues to face the impact of below-normal rainfall during the current season.
