Comprehensive Review of School Safety Measures

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday instructed officials to conduct a detailed audit of schools across the national capital. The review will focus on examining how effectively institutions are implementing mandatory child protection guidelines and whether they are complying with the provisions of the POCSO Act.

The directive was issued during a high-level meeting attended by senior officials, including representatives from the Delhi Police, the Women and Child Development Department, and the Directorate of Education. The discussions centered on assessing the current status of child protection mechanisms in schools and identifying areas that require immediate attention.

Strict Action Against Non-Compliant Institutions

The Education Department has been directed to ensure strict adherence to child protection regulations. Authorities have also been asked to initiate decisive action against schools that fail to meet prescribed safety standards.

In addition, the Lieutenant Governor sought a detailed report outlining the measures already taken and the steps proposed against institutions found violating or neglecting compliance requirements. The administration intends to closely monitor progress and ensure accountability at every level.

Child Protection Committees to Play Key Role

To strengthen safeguards within schools, the administration has reiterated the requirement for every educational institution to maintain a dedicated Child Protection Committee. These committees are expected to meet regularly and actively monitor the overall environment within school campuses.

Officials believe that consistent oversight by such committees can help identify concerns at an early stage and contribute to building a safer atmosphere for students. The initiative is aimed at institutionalizing child protection practices rather than relying solely on periodic inspections.

July Declared as Child Protection Awareness Month

As part of broader efforts to improve awareness, July will be observed as Child Protection Month throughout the city. During this period, authorities will organize a month-long awareness campaign focused on educating students, teachers, school staff, and parents about child safety responsibilities and reporting mechanisms.

The campaign will also include mandatory training sessions for stakeholders involved in child welfare and education. A comprehensive report on the campaign’s implementation and its outcomes has been requested by the Lieutenant Governor to assess its effectiveness.

Enhanced Police Presence Around Educational Hubs

The Delhi Police has been instructed to increase security arrangements around schools and locations frequently visited by students. Authorities have been asked to maintain a visible police presence, particularly during school opening and closing hours, when large numbers of students are commuting.

The administration believes that stronger policing around educational institutions can help discourage misconduct and improve the sense of safety among students and parents alike.

Zero-Tolerance Policy on Crimes Against Women and Children

Emphasizing the importance of public safety, the Lieutenant Governor reiterated that incidents involving harassment, molestation, or any form of abuse against women and children would not be tolerated. He stressed that protecting women and children remains a top priority for the administration.

He also expressed confidence that the upcoming women-only police stations, designed specifically to handle complaints involving women and children, would further strengthen enforcement efforts and improve access to support services.

Commitment to a Safer Learning Environment

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to student welfare, Sandhu stated that the safety, dignity, and well-being of every child must remain paramount. He emphasized that schools should be places where students can learn without fear and that all stakeholders must work collectively to ensure a secure and supportive educational environment across Delhi.
