Budget –The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is preparing for an important Budget session as legislators of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) are scheduled to gather at the party headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai, on Tuesday to review the government’s financial agenda and discuss their approach for the upcoming proceedings.
The meeting, expected to begin at 4 p.m., will bring together all TVK Members of the Legislative Assembly. Party leaders are likely to hold detailed discussions on the State’s 2026-27 General Budget, the Agriculture Budget, and several other matters that are expected to be debated during the Assembly session.
Budget Session to Begin on Wednesday
The gathering comes a day before the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly resumes its sittings for the presentation of the first full Budget of the TVK-led government. Finance Minister Maria Wilson is scheduled to present the General Budget on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone for the administration led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The following day, Agriculture Minister Vinoth is expected to table the Agriculture Budget for the 2026-27 financial year. Both financial statements will later be examined in detail by the Assembly before members move on to discussions related to departmental demands for grants.
Extended Assembly Proceedings Expected
According to the planned schedule, the Budget session is expected to continue for nearly six weeks. During this period, legislators will debate financial proposals, examine departmental expenditure plans, and discuss policy priorities outlined by the government.
The session is expected to play an important role in setting the government’s administrative and development agenda for the financial year while providing lawmakers with an opportunity to scrutinize spending proposals across various sectors.
First Full Budget Since New Government Took Office
The upcoming financial presentation follows the inaugural sitting of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly after the new government assumed office. That session began on June 18 with the Governor’s address, followed by discussions on the motion of thanks over three days. Chief Minister Vijay delivered the government’s reply on the final day before the House was adjourned indefinitely.
With the administration now preparing to present its first comprehensive Budget, attention has shifted toward the welfare initiatives and development programmes that may receive financial backing.
Focus on Election Promises
Several commitments made during the Assembly election campaign are expected to feature prominently in the Budget proposals. Among them is the government’s previously announced programme to distribute gold rings to newborn babies. The scheme is scheduled to be launched on September 15 to mark the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.
The government has also initiated steps to fulfil other major promises, including the provision of 200 units of free electricity every month for eligible consumers. Another key commitment under consideration is the waiver of crop loans of up to Rs 75,000, a measure aimed at supporting farmers across the State.
Strategy for Assembly Debates
Apart from reviewing policy announcements and welfare commitments, Tuesday’s meeting is expected to help the ruling party finalise its strategy for the forthcoming Assembly debates. Legislators are likely to discuss their approach to the Budget discussions, responses to opposition viewpoints, and deliberations on departmental financial allocations that will follow the presentation of the two Budgets.
