Broadcasting –  Public broadcaster Akashvani is preparing to deepen its engagement with audiences by introducing a stronger focus on hyperlocal programming, a move aimed at making its content more relevant to local communities and their everyday concerns.

The announcement was highlighted by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a visit to Pune on Wednesday. He said the broadcaster’s evolving content strategy would prioritize stories, issues and developments that directly reflect the aspirations and experiences of people at the local level.

Shift Towards Community-Centered Programming

According to the minister, the new approach is designed to bring Akashvani closer to listeners by ensuring that broadcasts address regional priorities and grassroots realities. By increasing the presence of locally relevant content, the broadcaster aims to create stronger ties with communities while enhancing public participation in its programming.

Officials believe that greater emphasis on hyperlocal reporting will help improve audience engagement and reinforce Akashvani’s long-standing role as a dependable source of information across urban and rural India. The initiative is also expected to encourage broader representation of local voices and issues that may not receive significant attention in mainstream national coverage.

Digital Transformation Aligned With Government Vision

Vaishnaw said the modernization effort is part of a wider plan inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make public broadcasting more accessible, technologically advanced and responsive to changing audience expectations.

The transformation involves adopting newer digital platforms while maintaining the broadcaster’s traditional strengths. The goal is to ensure that public service media remains relevant in an environment where audiences increasingly consume content through digital channels and mobile devices.

Marathi Bulletin to Continue in Pune

Addressing concerns regarding regional news services, the minister clarified that the Marathi news bulletin broadcast from Akashvani Pune will remain operational. He noted that the bulletin continues to play an important role in disseminating information and reaching audiences across Maharashtra.

The assurance comes amid discussions about restructuring and modernization within public broadcasting institutions. Maintaining regional-language services, he said, remains essential to ensuring that information reaches diverse audiences effectively.

Feedback From Employees Shaping Future Plans

In recent weeks, Vaishnaw has visited multiple Akashvani and Doordarshan centres across the country. During these visits, he interacted with reporters, officers and other employees, particularly younger professionals working within the public broadcasting network.

The discussions were intended to gather suggestions and understand challenges faced by staff members. Inputs collected from these interactions are expected to contribute to the future roadmap for strengthening public broadcasting services and improving audience outreach.

Focus on Digital-First and Localized Content

Akashvani, also known as All India Radio, functions under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and serves as the radio division of Prasar Bharati.

Earlier this month, while inaugurating a 20-kilowatt Akashvani FM transmitter in Ramgarh, Jaisalmer, Vaishnaw emphasized the need for broader institutional transformation within Prasar Bharati. He stated that rapid technological advancements require broadcasters to adopt a digital-first mindset while simultaneously strengthening their hyperlocal presence.

The minister also stressed the importance of bringing local artists, cultural performers and traditional artisans into the broadcasting ecosystem. Such participation, he said, would help preserve regional identities while making content more meaningful and relatable for listeners.

As Akashvani advances its modernization efforts, the combination of digital innovation and community-focused programming is expected to play a central role in shaping the future of public broadcasting in India.
