BorderSecurity –An American citizen detained near the India-Nepal border is being questioned by multiple central intelligence agencies as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding his presence in India and the recovery of a Chinese passport allegedly found in his possession. Officials are also looking into whether the case has any connection to an ongoing investigation involving foreign nationals accused of providing training to armed groups in Myanmar.
Arrest Near International Border
The detained individual has been identified as 36-year-old Jordan Brown, a resident of California in the United States. According to officials, he was apprehended on July 11 by personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) near border pillar number 516 in the Mainihwa area of Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district, close to the Sonauli border crossing with Nepal.
Police said Brown was stopped during a routine verification of travel documents. Authorities alleged that he attempted to escape when asked to produce identification but was quickly caught with assistance from local residents. Officials confirmed that the entire episode was captured on video during the operation.
Items Recovered During Search
Following his detention, security personnel reportedly recovered several items from Brown, including Rs 31,460 in cash, Nepalese currency, two mobile phones, a wristwatch, religious books, a diary, an artificial intelligence-powered translation device, and a Chinese passport.
Investigators are treating the Chinese passport as a key piece of evidence. Agencies are trying to determine how the American national acquired the document and whether it was issued legally or obtained under suspicious circumstances.
Agencies Examine Possible Myanmar Connection
Officials are also exploring whether Brown has any links to a separate investigation concerning foreign nationals allegedly involved in training members of the Kuki-Chin Army in Myanmar.
That earlier case involved another American citizen, identified as VanDyke, along with six Ukrainian nationals who were arrested in connection with the alleged activities. Investigators are now reviewing whether Brown had any contact with individuals connected to that case or whether the Chinese passport may have been obtained during travel linked to Myanmar.
Authorities clarified that the inquiry remains ongoing, and no conclusions have been reached regarding any possible association between the two investigations.
Travel History Under Verification
A criminal case has been registered against Brown at the Sonauli police station for allegedly entering India without valid travel documents.
During questioning, Brown reportedly provided a detailed but inconsistent account of his travels. According to investigators, he claimed that he had first travelled to Thailand, where he lost his American passport. He then said he moved to Sri Lanka before entering India by sea on November 2, 2025. Brown further told officials that he stayed in Goa for some time before eventually travelling to the India-Nepal border region.
Investigators are verifying each part of his travel history through available records and coordination with relevant agencies.
Conflicting Statements Raise Questions
Officials said Brown offered varying explanations about both his identity and the purpose of his visit to the border. Among his claims, he stated that he was married to an Indian yoga instructor and intended to meet someone in Nepal.
He also reportedly told investigators that he had studied at the University of California and previously served for six years in the United States Navy. Authorities are examining these statements as part of the verification process.
Officials confirmed that the United States Embassy has been informed about the detention. The investigation continues as security agencies work to establish Brown’s movements, verify his identity, and determine the origin of the Chinese passport recovered during his arrest.
