Basement Tragedy – A tragic incident unfolded in Haldwani’s Gaulapar area on Tuesday night when three members of a family lost their lives after being exposed to suspected toxic gas inside a sealed underground water tank. The victims, a mother and her two sons, reportedly became unconscious while work was underway to remove shuttering from a water tank constructed in the basement of their home. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the deaths.
Family Members Identified as Victims
Police identified the deceased as 55-year-old Saraswati Devi and her sons, Dharmendra Bisht, 40, and Khushal Bisht. According to officials, neighbours noticed the emergency and immediately rushed to help after finding the three family members unconscious. They were taken without delay to Dr Sushila Tiwari Government Hospital, where doctors declared all of them dead.
The sudden loss has left residents of Manpur Paschim village in shock, with many describing the incident as a heartbreaking accident that unfolded within minutes.
Rescue Attempt Ends in Multiple Fatalities
Initial findings suggest that the family had been working on removing shuttering from the slab of a water tank located in the basement of their house. Officials believe the tank had remained sealed for a long period, allowing poisonous gases to accumulate inside the confined space.
Investigators suspect that one of the family members first experienced breathing difficulty after approaching or entering the tank area. In an attempt to save him, the other two reportedly entered the same space one after another. They too were overcome by the lack of breathable air and the presence of hazardous gas, resulting in all three collapsing inside or near the tank.
Local residents eventually managed to pull the victims out before taking them to hospital, but medical staff could not revive them.
Police and Administration Begin Investigation
After receiving information through the 112 emergency helpline, police personnel from Chorgalia police station reached the location along with officials from the local administration. The area was inspected, and an inquiry was initiated to establish the sequence of events and identify the circumstances that led to the fatal accident.
Officials are examining whether proper precautions were followed before work began and whether the enclosed structure posed an unseen danger because it had remained unused for an extended period.
Authorities Await Scientific Confirmation
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Monika Arya stated that the available evidence indicates poisonous gas trapped inside the poorly ventilated basement water tank was likely responsible for the deaths. However, she clarified that the exact type of gas and its concentration would only be confirmed after a detailed technical investigation.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether forensic experts or technical teams collected air samples from the site for laboratory examination. The findings of the investigation are expected to provide greater clarity on the exact cause of the tragedy.
Safety Warning for Enclosed Underground Spaces
Following the incident, City Superintendent of Police Manoj Katyal appealed to the public to exercise extreme caution before entering enclosed structures such as water tanks, septic tanks or underground basements. He advised that no person should enter such confined spaces without ensuring adequate ventilation, protective safety equipment and oxygen level testing.
Officials warned that sealed underground chambers can become extremely dangerous due to oxygen depletion or the accumulation of harmful gases, creating life-threatening conditions within moments. The administration has urged residents to seek professional assistance before carrying out maintenance work in enclosed spaces to prevent similar accidents in the future.
