Encouraged by government-backed initiatives and technical assistance, many farmers in Kathua district are replacing conventional agricultural practices with high-density apple orchards to improve their long-term income and secure better livelihoods.
Modern Horticulture Gains Momentum
Located in the higher reaches of Kathua district, Bani has become a promising destination for advanced apple cultivation. Orchards filled with improved high-density apple varieties are gradually changing the area’s agricultural identity. Farmers say the move toward commercial horticulture reflects their determination to build a more sustainable future while making better use of the region’s favorable climate and terrain.
Support from the Department of Horticulture, along with various government welfare programmes, has played an important role in encouraging growers to adopt modern cultivation methods. Farmers Credit Government Support
Kartar Singh, one of the farmers from Bani, said government assistance has encouraged him to begin cultivating advanced apple varieties. According to him, several farmer-focused welfare schemes have made it easier to adopt improved agricultural practices and invest in long-term orchard development.
He explained that these initiatives have provided both financial confidence and technical support, enabling cultivators to work toward self-reliance while embracing modern farming methods. Despite the growing success of apple cultivation, farmers acknowledge that establishing an orchard requires patience and perseverance. Abdul Razak, another grower from the area, said unpredictable weather conditions continue to pose serious challenges during the early years of cultivation.
He noted that heavy snowfall, hailstorms, strong winds, and other climatic events often affect young plants and increase the risks associated with fruit production. Even so, he described the experience of seeing mature trees produce healthy apples after years of dedicated effort as deeply rewarding. According to Razak, the satisfaction of watching orchards flourish gives farmers the motivation to continue despite the hardships.
Department Targets Expansion of Fruit Production
The Department of Horticulture has outlined plans to expand modern fruit cultivation across the district. District Horticulture Officer Mohammad Shakil said the department aims to develop Bani into a leading horticulture centre in Jammu and Kashmir by encouraging more growers to adopt scientific farming techniques.
He stated that the region’s climate and geographical conditions are well suited for apple cultivation as well as several other fruit crops. Through ongoing government schemes, the department continues to supply quality saplings, technical guidance, and other essential resources to farmers. Officials believe wider participation in horticulture will contribute significantly to the area’s agricultural development.
Positive Economic Outlook for the Region
