Airport Development – Palasa Chosen for Major Aviation Growth Project in Andhra Pradesh
Airport Development – A significant infrastructure initiative is set to reshape the future of northern coastal Andhra Pradesh, with authorities selecting Palasa in Srikakulam district as the proposed site for a new domestic airport. Spread across nearly 1,261 acres, the project is expected to serve as a long-term catalyst for economic growth, improving connectivity and creating fresh opportunities in one of the state’s less-developed regions over the coming decades.

Site Identified After Detailed Assessment
According to Srikakulam District Collector Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar, extensive geographical and technical evaluations were carried out before Palasa was identified as the most suitable location for the airport. The preliminary assessment has already been conducted by the Airport Authority of India (AAI), which will oversee the project’s development and implementation process.
Officials believe the airport will play a key role in promoting balanced regional development by attracting investment and strengthening transport infrastructure across the district.
Aviation Hub Vision Takes Shape
Beyond the airport itself, authorities have outlined plans for a broader aviation-linked development zone. Proposed facilities include clean and non-polluting industries, commercial establishments, aircraft maintenance and hangar services, hotels, and other supporting infrastructure.
The administration expects these developments to transform the surrounding area into an important economic and business hub, generating sustained activity linked to aviation and related sectors.
Land Acquisition Process and Farmer Compensation
The proposed project area includes approximately 200 acres of government-owned land, while the remaining land is largely held by private owners. District officials have assured residents that compensation for affected landowners will be provided in accordance with the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013.
Authorities have emphasized that the process will be conducted transparently, with efforts focused on maintaining trust among local communities and ensuring fair treatment for all stakeholders involved.
No Village Displacement Planned
Officials have clarified that no villages will be relocated as part of the airport project. The district administration has stated that community participation remains a priority and that the development will move forward with the cooperation and consent of local residents.
As part of the consultation process, feedback has already been collected from more than 1,500 farmers. Many landowners have reportedly shown a willingness to support the initiative, viewing it as an investment in the future development of the region.
Employment Opportunities Expected to Rise
The administration expects the airport and associated industries to generate employment across multiple sectors and skill levels. Job opportunities are anticipated to range from entry-level positions to highly specialized professional roles.
Officials have also indicated that qualified candidates from nearby villages will receive preference wherever possible, helping local youth benefit directly from the project. The expected rise in employment could reduce outward migration from the district by creating more career options closer to home.
Long-Term Economic Benefits for the Region
District authorities believe the airport will strengthen local businesses, improve infrastructure, and encourage new investments across Srikakulam district. The project is also expected to enhance transportation access, making the region more attractive for commercial activity and future development.
The government has reiterated its commitment to supporting farmers through fair compensation measures while advancing a project that officials say could significantly contribute to the district’s economic transformation in the years ahead
