Agriculture – Political leaders from across the country assembled at Kisan Ghat in New Delhi on Friday to pay homage to former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh on his death anniversary. Among those present was Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary, who joined others in offering floral tributes to the veteran leader remembered for his long-standing commitment to farmers and rural communities.

After the tribute ceremony, Jayant Chaudhary spoke to journalists and said that Chaudhary Charan Singh continues to be remembered across India for his efforts to improve the lives of farmers. Chaudhary Charan Singh was born on December 23, 1902, and played a significant role in Indian politics for several decades. He served as the country’s fifth Prime Minister, holding office from July 1979 until January 1980.
Throughout his political career, he occupied several important ministerial positions. In 1960, he served as the Minister for Home and Agriculture in the Uttar Pradesh government led by C.B. Gupta. Later, between 1962 and 1963, he handled the Agriculture and Forests portfolio under the leadership of Sucheta Kripalani.

Charan Singh is widely recognized for introducing measures aimed at improving the condition of rural households and farmers. One of his significant initiatives was the Redemption Bill of 1939, which helped provide relief to individuals burdened by rural debt.
Another notable reform came through the Land Holding Act of 1960 during his tenure as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. The legislation sought to establish a more uniform system of land ceilings across the state and reflected his long-standing focus on agrarian reform.
