Incident Occurred Near District Border

The explosion took place close to the inter-district boundary between Kanker and Narayanpur. Police officials stated that a DRG team from the Chhotebethiya police station had been deployed in the region for routine area domination, search missions, and detection of hidden explosives.

During the operation, personnel were attempting to neutralise an IED believed to have been planted earlier by Maoist groups. The device unexpectedly detonated during the process, leading to severe consequences for the team involved.

Casualties and Injuries Reported

The blast left four security personnel injured, three of whom succumbed to their injuries at the site. The deceased were identified as Inspector Sukhram Vatti, Constable Krishna Komra, and Constable Sanjay Gadhpale.

Another constable, Parmanand Komra, suffered serious injuries and was immediately taken for medical treatment. His condition is reported to be critical, and he is currently under close medical supervision.

Officials Describe Incident as Unfortunate Accident

Bastar Range Inspector General of Police P. Sundarraj termed the incident a tragic accident that occurred during an ongoing operation aimed at ensuring safety in the region.

He noted that security forces have been actively working to identify and defuse explosives planted by insurgents. In recent months, teams have successfully detected and neutralised hundreds of IEDs based on intelligence inputs and information received from former Maoist cadres who have surrendered.

According to officials, such operations remain essential to maintaining security in areas affected by insurgency, despite the risks involved.

Continued Operations in Maoist-Affected Areas

Security forces continue to carry out search and clearance missions across the Bastar region, which has long been affected by Maoist activity. These operations are aimed at reducing threats posed by hidden explosives and ensuring safer conditions for both civilians and security personnel.

Authorities indicated that more details regarding the incident may emerge as the investigation progresses.

Recent Anti-Insurgency Operation in the Region

In a separate development earlier in April, security forces conducted an encounter in the forested areas under the jurisdiction of Chhotebethiya police station in Kanker district. During that operation, a Maoist area commander carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh was killed.

The individual, identified as Rupi, was recovered from the site along with a weapon. Officials confirmed that anti-insurgency efforts in the region are ongoing, with further updates expected as operations continue.

Ongoing Challenges for Security Forces

The latest incident highlights the persistent challenges faced by security personnel operating in regions affected by Maoist insurgency. Hidden explosive devices remain one of the most significant threats during such operations, particularly in remote forested areas.

Despite these risks, officials emphasise that coordinated efforts, improved intelligence gathering, and continued vigilance are helping to reduce the frequency of such threats over time.

Further updates on the injured personnel and operational developments are awaited.
