National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Saturday appealed to the country’s youth to place national service above individual ambitions, saying India is currently passing through a rare and significant phase in its history. Speaking after receiving the Lokmanya Tilak National Award 2026, Doval encouraged young people to dedicate themselves to the country’s long-term progress and make the most of the opportunity available to shape a stronger future for the nation.

Call for Commitment to National Interest

Addressing the gathering, Doval said the younger generation should remain focused on the larger interests of the country rather than temporary personal benefits. According to him, meaningful national progress requires citizens who are prepared to set aside limited self-interest whenever it comes into conflict with the broader needs of the nation.

The Lokmanya Tilak National Award 2026, presented by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on behalf of the Tilak Smarak Trust, recognized Doval’s contribution to public service. Accepting the honour, he expressed gratitude and described it as a privilege to receive an award associated with one of India’s most respected freedom movement leaders.

India at a Defining Moment

Doval emphasized that the country is experiencing what he described as a unique window of opportunity that should not be allowed to pass. He said the present period demands collective effort and determination to strengthen the nation and build lasting institutions for future generations.

Expressing optimism about India’s direction, he said he believes the country will achieve its goals and write a new chapter in its history through sustained commitment and responsible leadership.

Praise for National Leadership

During his address, Doval also acknowledged the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He said India is fortunate to have leaders committed to national development and added that he has personally witnessed Shah’s clear vision and dedication while working alongside him.

Remembering Lokmanya Tilak’s Legacy

Reflecting on the life of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Doval described him as much more than a freedom fighter. He said Tilak’s influence extended to social reform and intellectual thought, making him one of the most significant figures in India’s national awakening.

Recalling an episode from Tilak’s life, Doval noted that when a plague struck Pune and claimed the life of Tilak’s 21-year-old son, he chose to remain in the city instead of leaving. According to Doval, this reflected Tilak’s deep sense of duty and commitment to society during a difficult period.

Freedom Carries Responsibility

Doval said many young people today may take freedom for granted without fully understanding the sacrifices made by those who fought for India’s independence. He observed that freedom is not simply about personal choice but also about responsibility toward society and the nation.

He said Tilak inspired ordinary citizens to find their voice during a challenging period in history and awakened a new sense of public consciousness. Doval further remarked that while people often speak about their rights, they should also remember the sacrifices made to secure those rights and ensure they are exercised responsibly.

Referring to Tilak’s famous declaration, “Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it,” Doval said the leader wanted every citizen to embrace the same spirit of responsibility, determination, and commitment to the nation rather than viewing the slogan as merely a historic statement.
