Fuel – Government Assures Adequate Supply Amid Hormuz Disruption Concerns

Fuel –  The central government on Saturday appealed to the public to refrain from panic buying of petrol, diesel, and LPG, emphasizing that fuel stocks across the country remain sufficient despite logistical concerns arising from the temporary disruption in the Strait of Hormuz.

Government Calls for Calm and Responsible Consumption

In an official communication, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reassured citizens that multiple steps are being taken to maintain uninterrupted fuel availability. The ministry urged people to depend only on verified updates and to avoid unnecessary stockpiling, which could strain supply chains.

Authorities also encouraged energy conservation measures as a precautionary step while the global situation evolves.

Focus on Essential and Household Energy Needs

To ensure that critical services remain unaffected, the government has placed priority on supplying domestic LPG and piped natural gas (PNG). Households, healthcare facilities, and essential services are being given preference in allocation.

Officials confirmed that adjustments in distribution systems, including extending the interval between LPG refills, are being implemented to balance demand effectively without causing inconvenience to consumers.

Crackdown on Hoarding and Black Marketing

The government has intensified its efforts to curb hoarding and illegal trade practices. Enforcement teams have conducted more than 3,700 inspections nationwide and issued nearly 1,000 notices to LPG distributors for irregularities.

As part of strict action, 27 dealerships have been suspended so far. Authorities stated that such measures are necessary to maintain fair distribution and prevent artificial shortages.

No Immediate Shortage Despite Increased Demand

Despite concerns triggered by the geopolitical situation, officials reported no evidence of LPG shortages at distribution points. On Friday alone, approximately 51 lakh cylinders were delivered across the country, indicating that supply chains are functioning normally.

A significant portion of these deliveries—around 95 percent—was managed through online booking systems, reflecting improved efficiency in distribution.

Adjustments in Commercial and Alternative Fuel Use

To manage demand more effectively, commercial LPG supplies have been temporarily limited to 70 percent of pre-crisis levels. This move is intended to ensure that domestic consumption remains unaffected.

Additionally, alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal are being utilized in certain sectors to reduce pressure on LPG supplies.

Natural Gas Supply Remains Stable

The government also addressed concerns regarding natural gas availability. It confirmed that households and the transport sector continue to receive full supply. Allocations to industries and fertilizer units are being gradually increased, supported by incoming liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments.

Officials highlighted that this balanced approach helps maintain economic activity while safeguarding essential consumption.

Refineries Operating at High Capacity

According to the ministry, all refineries in the country are functioning at near-maximum capacity, supported by sufficient crude oil reserves. Petrol pumps across India remain well-stocked, ensuring that consumers do not face disruptions in daily fuel access.

This operational readiness is part of a broader strategy to maintain stability in the domestic energy market.

Measures to Control Price Impact

To shield consumers from rising global oil prices, the government has reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre. Additionally, export duties have been imposed on diesel and aviation turbine fuel to ensure greater availability within the country.

These steps aim to ease financial pressure on consumers while maintaining adequate domestic supply.

Coordination with State Governments

State authorities have been directed to strengthen monitoring systems, prevent misinformation, and ensure smooth distribution of fuel. The Centre reiterated that India’s overall energy security remains intact and that coordinated efforts are in place to handle any emerging challenges.

Officials emphasized that public cooperation is essential to maintaining stability during this period.
