Opposition leaders have intensified their criticism of the handling of the case, arguing that stronger legal measures should have been taken at an earlier stage to ensure accountability and maintain public confidence in the inquiry process.
Congress Leader Demands Stronger Legal Action
Congress MP Tariq Anwar has alleged that authorities failed to act decisively against individuals accused of involvement in the suspected misuse of temple offerings. According to Anwar, the absence of immediate legal proceedings has created doubts about whether those responsible are being adequately scrutinized.
He stated that the matter required prompt registration of a First Information Report (FIR), followed by arrests and questioning of those facing allegations. In his view, the lack of such steps has raised concerns that efforts may have been made to shield certain individuals connected to the case.
Investigation Ordered Following Trust Request
The controversy gained momentum after the Uttar Pradesh government established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on June 14 to examine claims related to the handling of donations received at the Ram Temple. The decision was taken following a request from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir Trust, which sought an independent inquiry into the allegations.
The three-member panel includes senior administrative and police officials. Vijay Vishwas Pant, Divisional Commissioner of Lucknow, is part of the team along with Inspector General Kiran S and Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan. The committee has been instructed to submit both preliminary and final findings at the earliest opportunity.
Opposition Raises Concerns About Fairness of Inquiry
The issue has also drawn reactions from Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, who questioned whether the SIT would be allowed to operate without external influence. Speaking to journalists in Kannauj, Yadav said the reports surrounding the alleged misuse of devotees’ contributions were troubling and had generated concern among the public.
He emphasized that millions of people across the country place immense faith in Lord Ram and contribute offerings with deep devotion. Reports suggesting possible irregularities in the management of those donations, he said, have come as a shock to many believers.

Yadav further argued that the controversy has affected public emotions connected to long-standing religious traditions. He claimed that the situation has raised serious questions about the protection of devotees’ contributions and the responsibility of institutions entrusted with managing them.
