PoJK – Fresh unrest in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir has drawn attention to growing political and economic challenges, with protests, clashes, and official reactions highlighting deepening concerns over governance and public dissatisfaction.

Former Indian Ambassador to Ukraine Vidya Bhushan Soni has linked the recent violence and unrest in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) to increasing public frustration over Pakistan’s domestic and economic situation. Speaking on the developments, Soni argued that Islamabad has remained focused on projecting its role on international issues while failing to adequately address challenges affecting its own citizens.

Former Diplomat Points to Domestic Challenges

According to Soni, expectations within Pakistan that improved international engagement would lead to renewed economic assistance have not been fulfilled. He said this has contributed to growing disappointment among sections of the population, adding that economic pressures and political uncertainty are becoming increasingly visible.

He further stated that several groups critical of the Pakistani government, including Baloch organisations and residents of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, have become more vocal in expressing their grievances. In his view, these developments reflect wider public dissatisfaction over the country’s internal conditions.

Concerns Over Public Discontent

Soni maintained that Pakistan should prioritise resolving domestic issues before focusing on international affairs. He suggested that greater attention to public welfare and internal governance could help ease tensions within the country.

He also warned that the current unrest may continue if underlying concerns remain unresolved. According to his assessment, authorities could respond with stricter measures against protesters, a development he said may further intensify public resentment instead of reducing tensions.

Situation in Pakistan-Administered Kashmir

Referring specifically to Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir, Soni described the situation as particularly sensitive. He said many residents believe their concerns have not received sufficient attention, resulting in growing frustration among local communities.

His remarks come as reports of violent clashes and firing from the region continue to attract attention, with multiple stakeholders presenting differing accounts of the ongoing developments.

JKAAC Raises Allegations Over Security Operations

Meanwhile, the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKAAC) has issued a series of statements through its official X account regarding the recent incidents. The organisation expressed concern over the reported treatment of injured individuals and alleged that masked persons dressed in civilian clothing were seen alongside police personnel during security operations.

The committee also claimed that videos related to the clashes have circulated in Mirpur, prompting further discussion about the events taking place in the region.

Claims of Property Damage and Investigation Demand

In separate statements, the JKAAC alleged that civilian properties were damaged during the ongoing crackdown, raising questions about the conduct of security forces. The organisation further claimed that surveillance equipment had been deliberately destroyed, stating that such actions could affect transparency, accountability, and the preservation of evidence.

The committee has called on the United Nations, international media organisations, diplomatic missions, and global human rights bodies to independently examine the available material and verify the facts. It has also sought an independent and impartial international investigation into the recent incidents in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
