MissileTest – North Korea Expands Weapons Program with Fresh Rocket and Missile Trials

MissileTest –  North Korean leader Kim Jong-un supervised a fresh series of weapons trials aimed at strengthening the country’s military capabilities, according to state media reports released on Friday. The tests included an upgraded multiple rocket launcher, tactical missile systems, and long-range artillery ammunition, highlighting Pyongyang’s continued focus on improving its offensive military strength under its long-term defense modernization strategy.

Weapons Trials Coincide With Korean War Anniversary

The military exercises were conducted on Thursday, marking the 76th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War. Analysts believe the timing was intended to underline North Korea’s ability to strike strategic locations across South Korea, a country that Pyongyang has increasingly described as its principal security adversary in recent years.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim personally observed the testing of several advanced weapons that form part of the country’s ongoing five-year military development program. The initiative is designed to modernize North Korea’s artillery and missile forces through technological improvements and expanded operational capabilities.

New Rocket Launcher and Missile Upgrades

Among the systems tested was an upgraded 240mm 24-tube multiple rocket launcher equipped with an autonomous precision guidance system. KCNA reported that the enhanced launcher now has an operational range of up to 90 kilometers, making it a more capable corps-level fire support system.

North Korea also tested specially designed warheads for tactical ballistic missiles. State media claimed these warheads are intended to cause significant damage to strategic military infrastructure, including air bases, ports, and power facilities. Although no technical details were disclosed, defense experts suggested the weapons could involve cluster-type or armor-penetrating munitions capable of affecting larger target areas.

Long-Range Artillery Receives Attention

The latest round of testing also included extended-range 155mm artillery shells designed for self-propelled howitzers. KCNA stated that the ammunition has a range of approximately 65 kilometers. If those claims are accurate, military observers say the improved artillery could potentially place parts of Seoul within striking distance.

Kim said the latest trials demonstrated meaningful technological progress in North Korea’s efforts to improve combat readiness along the southern border. He emphasized that the country’s defense policy is intended not only to strengthen protective capabilities but also to reinforce offensive power strong enough to discourage potential military confrontation.

Kim Highlights Deterrence Strategy

During remarks carried by KCNA, Kim stated that maintaining pressure on potential opponents forms an important part of North Korea’s military deterrence strategy. He added that the country’s long-range strike systems are being upgraded rapidly, allowing its armed forces to enhance operational effectiveness within a relatively short period.

The latest statements reflect North Korea’s increasingly firm position toward South Korea. Since late 2023, Pyongyang has officially characterized relations with Seoul as those between two hostile states, signaling a significant shift in inter-Korean policy.

South Korean Military Continues Assessment

South Korea’s military did not immediately issue a public announcement regarding the latest launches. Officials from the Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed that approximately ten projectiles fired from multiple rocket launchers had been detected on Thursday and that a detailed analysis remains underway.

Authorities assessed the launches as multiple rocket systems rather than short-range ballistic missiles. The South Korean military continues to monitor developments while evaluating the technical characteristics and strategic implications of the weapons tested by North Korea.
