Missiles –North Korea has announced the successful testing of newly enhanced tactical ballistic missiles carrying cluster-type warheads, marking another step in its ongoing military advancements. The launch exercise, which took place on Sunday, was directly supervised by the country’s leader Kim Jong Un, according to official state media reports released on Monday.

State-run sources reported that five Hwasongpho-11 Ra tactical missiles were launched during the drill. These surface-to-surface weapons reportedly struck a designated target approximately 136 kilometres away, demonstrating what authorities described as improved precision and destructive capacity.

Initial observations from neighbouring countries detected the missile activity, though there were differing interpretations regarding the launch method. While North Korea stated that the missiles were fired from land-based systems, officials in Japan and South Korea indicated that some of the launches appeared to originate near the coastal Sinpo region.

Questions Over Launch Platform

South Korean defence officials suggested the possibility that at least some of the missiles may have been launched from a submarine, citing the geographical characteristics of the launch site. This assessment, if confirmed, would indicate further progress in North Korea’s submarine-based missile capabilities.

However, North Korean sources clarified that the primary goal of the exercise was not related to launch platforms but rather to test the effectiveness of the missile payloads. The focus, according to official statements, was on evaluating the performance of cluster bomb warheads and fragmentation-based explosive devices integrated into the missiles.

Continued Focus on Cluster Warheads

This latest test follows another recent trial earlier in the month, where North Korea claimed to have evaluated a similar missile system equipped with a cluster-type warhead. The repeated testing suggests a consistent effort to refine and deploy such munitions as part of its short-range strike arsenal.

During the inspection of the latest test, Kim Jong Un reportedly expressed satisfaction with the progress made by scientists and engineers. He noted that the development of varied cluster warheads could significantly enhance the military’s ability to conduct concentrated strikes over wide areas.

Global Concerns Over Cluster Munitions

Cluster weapons remain controversial due to their wide-area impact and the risk posed by unexploded submunitions that can remain hazardous long after deployment. These concerns have led to international efforts to restrict their use through agreements such as the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

Despite this, North Korea is not among the countries that have signed the treaty. While more than 120 nations have committed to banning such weapons, several countries, including major military powers, remain outside the agreement.

Broader Military Strategy

The recent missile tests are part of a larger strategy by North Korea to modernise its armed forces. This push has intensified in recent years, particularly after diplomatic efforts between Pyongyang and Washington stalled in 2019.

Since then, the country has accelerated its development of advanced military technologies. These include multi-warhead missile systems, hypersonic weapons, and submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Analysts believe these efforts are aimed at strengthening deterrence and overcoming regional missile defence systems.

The continued testing of such weapons highlights ongoing tensions in the region and underscores the challenges facing international efforts to limit the spread and use of advanced missile technologies.
