Drones – Moscow Region Faces Massive Overnight UAV Assault as Defences Respond
Drones –Russian authorities said air defence systems intercepted the majority of hundreds of drones launched toward the Moscow region overnight, although the large-scale attack still resulted in injuries and damage to civilian property.
Large-Scale Drone Attack Targets Moscow Region
Russian officials reported on Monday that the Moscow region came under one of the most extensive overnight drone attacks in recent months. According to local authorities, more than 400 unmanned aerial vehicles headed toward the Russian capital and nearby districts during the night. Air defence units were deployed across the region and successfully intercepted most of the incoming drones before they reached central areas.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that the attacks began around 8:30 p.m. local time and continued until approximately 5:00 a.m. He said that air defence systems neutralised the majority of the drones while they were still approaching the region. Sobyanin added that 85 drones were destroyed as they neared Moscow, helping reduce the potential impact on the capital.
Civilian Areas Sustain Damage
Despite the large number of interceptions, some drones reached populated locations, causing damage to residential properties and public infrastructure. Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov said several districts, including Podolsk, Domodedovo and Odintsovo, were affected during the overnight assault.
According to the governor, emergency services responded to incidents involving damaged private homes and other civilian facilities. Authorities have begun assessing the extent of the destruction while repair crews and rescue personnel continue working in the affected areas.
Injuries Reported After Overnight Strikes
Vorobyov said preliminary information indicated that at least two people suffered injuries during the attack. One individual was reportedly hurt after a fire broke out at a private residence in Domodedovo, while another was injured when a drone fell close to a vehicle on the M-4 highway.
Separately, Domodedovo Hospital said six people, including three foreign nationals, were admitted with blast-related injuries. Officials did not immediately clarify whether these patients were the same individuals mentioned by the regional governor or if their injuries were directly linked to the overnight drone operation. Authorities have not released additional details regarding their conditions.
Domodedovo Among Key Locations Affected
Domodedovo, located south of Moscow, is home to one of the Russian capital’s major international airports and serves as an important transportation hub. While officials confirmed that the district was among those impacted, there was no immediate indication that airport operations experienced significant disruption because of the overnight events.
Emergency response teams remained active across the region as officials monitored the situation and continued evaluating the consequences of the attack.
Cross-Border Attacks Continue to Escalate
The latest incident comes amid an ongoing increase in long-range strikes between Russia and Ukraine. Kyiv has expanded drone operations targeting Russian territory in recent months, describing them as a response to years of Russian military attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
A day earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had launched one of its largest ballistic missile assaults on Kyiv during the previous night. According to Ukrainian authorities, the attack killed one person and left 16 others injured.
The continuing exchange of drone and missile strikes highlights the intensifying nature of the conflict, with both countries reporting attacks affecting civilian areas as the war continues without signs of an immediate resolution.
