Diplomacy – US Reaffirms Strong India Partnership While Maintaining Pakistan Ties

Diplomacy – The United States has reiterated its commitment to expanding its strategic partnership with India, while emphasizing that its relationships with both India and Pakistan are pursued independently and should not be viewed as competing interests. The clarification came from US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott in response to questions regarding Washington’s decision to support upgrades to Pakistan’s F-16 fighter aircraft fleet despite describing India as one of its most important strategic partners.

US Clarifies Position on South Asian Partnerships

Speaking on the matter, Pigott said the United States values its engagement with both New Delhi and Islamabad, stressing that each bilateral relationship is guided by its own objectives and priorities. According to him, cooperation with India continues to be a major focus for Washington, with efforts underway to further strengthen collaboration across multiple sectors.

He noted that the United States remains dedicated to advancing defence and security ties with India while exploring new avenues for deeper cooperation. The partnership, he said, continues to evolve through shared interests and practical outcomes rather than geopolitical competition.

Expanding Defence and Security Cooperation

Pigott highlighted the growing defence relationship between the two countries, pointing to increasing cooperation across air, maritime and land-based domains. He said both nations are working closely to promote stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region, an area considered strategically important for global trade and regional balance.

The spokesperson added that defence engagement between the two democracies has expanded significantly in recent years. Washington is actively looking at opportunities to elevate military and security cooperation, reflecting the broader strength of the bilateral relationship.

Focus on Shared Strategic Goals

Describing the India-US relationship as historic, Pigott said the partnership is built on practical achievements and common interests. He referred to recent agreements and initiatives that demonstrate the growing alignment between the two countries on critical global and regional issues.

Among the areas of cooperation highlighted were efforts to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific, improve maritime domain awareness, tackle illegal narcotics trafficking and combat piracy. These initiatives, he said, contribute to regional security while also supporting economic growth and prosperity.

Pigott emphasized that collaboration between the two nations extends beyond security matters and includes efforts aimed at unlocking greater economic opportunities through trusted and reliable partnerships.

Critical Minerals Agreement Marks New Milestone

A major development in bilateral ties came during US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent visit to India, when both countries signed a Critical Minerals Framework. The agreement is designed to strengthen cooperation in securing essential mineral resources needed for advanced technologies, clean energy systems and future industrial growth.

The framework seeks to establish reliable supply chains among trusted partners, helping both nations reduce vulnerabilities in critical sectors. Officials described the agreement as an important step in strengthening long-term economic and strategic cooperation.

Building Secure Supply Chains

The new framework builds on discussions held earlier in 2026 in Washington, where Rubio launched the Forum on Resource Geostrategic Engagement (FORGE). The initiative aims to support collaboration among partner countries in securing access to critical minerals that are increasingly important for modern industries.

According to information released by the US Embassy, the American government is supporting critical mineral projects through a combination of investments, financing mechanisms and partnerships with private industry. These efforts are intended to encourage large-scale development projects that can strengthen supply chains while boosting economic competitiveness.

US officials believe that increased public and private investment in this sector will contribute to national security objectives and support future technological advancement. The broader strategy also aims to create resilient international networks capable of meeting growing global demand for critical resources
