Speaking during the Capitol Hill Summit 2026 hosted by the US-India Friendship Council, Ross said more American students, researchers and professionals should visit India to better understand the country’s growing economic and geopolitical importance. According to the North Carolina Democrat, direct interaction between citizens of both nations can strengthen long-term bilateral trust and cooperation.

Ross Reflects on Personal Connection With India

Ross shared details of her first visit to India, recalling that the experience left a lasting impression on her early in her political career. She said she travelled to the country years ago alongside Kamala Harris, who was then serving as California’s Attorney General.

The congresswoman noted that the trip gave her a deeper appreciation for India’s culture, democratic values and expanding global influence. She described the country as welcoming and said firsthand exposure helps Americans better understand India beyond headlines and policy discussions.

Ross added that stronger travel and academic opportunities could help future generations in both nations develop closer personal and professional relationships.

India-US Partnership Described as Strategically Important

During her remarks, Ross characterised the India-US relationship as one of the world’s most significant strategic partnerships. She said both countries are united by their commitment to democratic institutions, civil liberties and economic progress.

According to Ross, cooperation between Washington and New Delhi will remain important in addressing future global challenges involving technology, innovation and international stability. She stressed that continued collaboration between the two nations is necessary for protecting democratic values and supporting long-term global development.

Indian American Community Recognised in North Carolina

Ross also highlighted the growing contribution of the Indian American community in North Carolina, particularly within the Research Triangle region known for its universities and technology industries.

She said Indian Americans have become deeply connected to the state’s economic and educational growth through business leadership, scientific research and entrepreneurship. Ross noted that many families from the Indian diaspora now play an important role in shaping local communities across the state.

The congresswoman specifically mentioned Morrisville, a town within her congressional district, where a large South Asian population has contributed to the area’s cultural diversity. She pointed to community developments such as a regulation cricket facility as an example of the region’s evolving multicultural identity.

Importance of Indian Students Highlighted

Ross also spoke about the role of Indian students in American higher education institutions. She said students from India represent one of the largest international student groups in the United States and continue to contribute significantly to academic research and innovation.

She expressed concern over policies and restrictions that could create difficulties for international students pursuing education opportunities abroad. Ross argued that academic collaboration remains a key pillar of India-US engagement and should continue receiving bipartisan support.

According to her, universities and research institutions in both countries benefit greatly from student exchange programmes, scientific partnerships and joint educational initiatives.

Congress Addressing Trade and Visa Concerns

The congresswoman additionally referred to ongoing bipartisan efforts in the US Congress aimed at resolving visa-related concerns and trade disputes involving India. Ross said lawmakers from both political parties have worked together on issues affecting economic cooperation between the two countries.

She also praised Congressman Ro Khanna for helping strengthen ties between American lawmakers and India. Ross said travelling with Khanna to cities such as Mumbai and Hyderabad helped her gain broader insight into India’s technological development and entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Ross has represented North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District since 2021 and currently serves on the House Judiciary Committee as well as the Committee on Science, Space and Technology.
