Governance – India has strongly defended its democratic framework and commitment to human rights after comments made by a Norwegian newspaper columnist during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s joint press appearance with Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre drew attention online.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded firmly to the controversy, stressing that the country remains committed to constitutional protections, gender equality, and democratic principles. MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George addressed the issue during a media briefing and underlined India’s long-standing democratic traditions.
India Highlights Constitutional Safeguards
During the interaction with journalists, Sibi George stated that India’s constitutional structure guarantees fundamental rights to all citizens and provides legal remedies in cases where rights are violated. He said the country continues to take pride in its democratic institutions and judicial system.
George also pointed to India’s scale and diversity while responding to criticism from international observers. According to him, many people outside the country fail to understand the complexity and size of India’s democratic and media environment.
He noted that despite representing nearly one-sixth of the global population, India does not contribute proportionately to global instability or conflict. The statement was presented as an example of the country’s social and political resilience.
Focus on Women’s Rights and Equality
The MEA official further emphasized India’s early commitment to equal voting rights for women after independence in 1947. He contrasted this with several nations where women received voting rights decades later.
George said India ensured equal participation in democracy from the beginning of its independence journey, reflecting the nation’s belief in equality and civil liberties. He added that constitutional protections and access to courts remain available to citizens seeking justice.
The remarks were aimed at reinforcing India’s position that democratic values and human rights are deeply embedded within its political system and legal framework.
Response to International Media Commentary
The issue gained traction after a Norwegian commentator posted on social media platform X claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not respond to her question during the joint press statement with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
The commentator also referred to the World Press Freedom Index while discussing media freedom rankings related to India and Norway. The post generated debate online and prompted reactions from officials and political observers.
Responding indirectly to such criticism, George questioned the credibility of certain international reports and non-governmental organizations frequently cited in discussions about India. He argued that selective reporting often overlooks the scale and diversity of the Indian media landscape.
India Defends Size and Diversity of Media Ecosystem
Highlighting the country’s extensive news network, George said India has hundreds of television news channels operating across multiple languages, including English and Hindi. He argued that the volume of daily reporting and public debate demonstrates the openness of India’s democratic environment.
According to him, critics who rely on limited reports from external organizations may not fully understand the realities of India’s media ecosystem. He stressed that India’s democratic processes continue to function through active public discourse, judicial oversight, and electoral participation.
The exchange comes at a time when discussions around press freedom, democratic governance, and human rights remain central to international political dialogue. India has repeatedly maintained that its institutions are capable of addressing internal challenges within the framework of the Constitutio
