Cleanliness Drive – Kedarnath Pilgrimage Route Sees Massive Waste Collection Effort
Cleanliness Drive – The administration in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag has stepped up sanitation efforts along the route leading to Kedarnath Temple as thousands of pilgrims continue to arrive for the annual yatra. Officials confirmed on Monday that nearly 25 tonnes of waste have already been cleared from the trekking path and nearby temple areas in an attempt to maintain hygiene and protect the fragile Himalayan environment.

Continuous Cleaning Along the Trekking Route
According to district authorities, sanitation teams are working daily between Gaurikund and Kedarnath Dham to ensure that litter does not accumulate during the pilgrimage season. Workers have been assigned to collect waste scattered across the trekking trail, resting points, and temple surroundings. The collected garbage is then processed through scientifically managed disposal systems.
Officials stated that both biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste are being separated before disposal to reduce environmental damage. Plastic materials gathered during the operation are also being sent for recycling. The administration has indicated that the cleanliness campaign will continue throughout the yatra season to support sustainable pilgrimage practices.
Deposit Refund System Produces Positive Results
District Magistrate Vishal Mishra said the administration has also been running a Deposit Refund System aimed at encouraging visitors and locals to participate in waste collection efforts. Under this initiative, individuals can submit collected waste and receive a refund in return.
Mishra noted that the system has already helped authorities gather more than 50 tonnes of waste. He described the initiative as an effective step toward improving cleanliness standards during the pilgrimage period.
The district administration is also focusing on the scientific handling and disposal of all waste generated during the yatra. Officials are monitoring the process regularly to ensure environmental guidelines are followed properly in the ecologically sensitive region.
Rising Number of Pilgrims at Kedarnath Shrine
Authorities reported that the number of devotees visiting Kedarnath this year has been increasing steadily. As per official figures shared on Monday, nearly 6.05 lakh pilgrims have already offered prayers at the shrine since the beginning of the pilgrimage season.
With the flow of visitors expected to rise further in the coming weeks, the administration has strengthened arrangements related to crowd management and public safety. Officials believe that improved monitoring and better coordination among departments will help manage the increasing footfall smoothly.
Additional Officers Deployed for Crowd Management
To handle the growing number of pilgrims, senior officers have been assigned specific responsibilities along the yatra route and temple premises. The district administration confirmed that Circle Officer-rank officials have been appointed to supervise crowd control operations directly.
Apart from these officers, Sector Officers and sub-divisional magistrates have also been deployed at key locations to regulate movement and maintain order during peak hours. Authorities said the additional deployment is intended to improve coordination, reduce congestion, and ensure the safety of devotees visiting the shrine.
The Kedarnath pilgrimage remains one of the most significant religious journeys in India, attracting lakhs of visitors every year. Along with managing crowds, the administration is placing special emphasis on environmental conservation to ensure the Himalayan region remains protected despite the heavy movement of pilgrims.
