WildlifeTrafficking – Telangana Authorities Bust Illegal Snake Trade in Warangal

TWildlifeTrafficking – elangana police and revenue intelligence officials have taken action against suspected wildlife trafficking after a covert operation in Warangal led to the seizure of protected snake species.

Wildlife trafficking warangal snake trade

A coordinated operation carried out by officials in Telangana resulted in the arrest of a man allegedly linked to the unlawful trade of live snakes in Warangal district. Authorities confirmed that two live Indian Red Sand Boa snakes were recovered during the action conducted through an undercover surveillance exercise.

Undercover Operation Leads to Arrest

Officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Hyderabad, said the agency had received confidential inputs about a person attempting to sell protected snakes through an illegal wildlife market operating in Warangal. Acting on the information, officers organised a decoy operation on Sunday to track the suspect’s movement and verify the transaction.

Investigators identified the accused at the suspected trading location and intercepted him during the operation. A search of the bag he was carrying reportedly led to the recovery of two live Indian Red Sand Boa snakes, scientifically known as Eryx johnii.

The species is protected under Indian wildlife laws and is considered highly vulnerable to illegal trafficking due to demand in black-market wildlife trade networks.

Protected Species Covered Under Wildlife Law

Authorities stated that the Indian Red Sand Boa falls under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Species included in this category receive the highest level of legal protection in India, making hunting, possession, transportation, or commercial trade a punishable offence.

Following the seizure, officials transferred the recovered reptiles, along with the packaging materials and the detained individual, to the Forest Range Officer of the Warangal Range for further legal proceedings under the Wildlife Protection Act.

Forest and wildlife authorities are expected to continue the investigation to determine whether the accused had links to a larger wildlife smuggling network operating across states.

Illegal Wildlife Trade Remains a Concern

Law enforcement agencies across India have intensified surveillance in recent years due to increasing cases involving illegal animal trafficking. Protected reptiles, exotic birds, and rare mammals are frequently targeted for illegal sale in underground markets.

Wildlife experts have repeatedly warned that trafficking of protected species not only threatens ecological balance but also violates conservation laws designed to safeguard endangered wildlife populations.

Officials have not yet released additional details regarding the source of the snakes or possible buyers connected to the case. Further investigation is currently underway.

Separate Incident Sparks Tension Over Truck Inspection

In another development reported from Telangana, police said tensions escalated late Saturday night after two groups clashed over suspicions related to alleged illegal cow transportation.

According to police officials, one group stopped a truck after suspecting that cattle were being transported unlawfully. However, individuals associated with the vehicle claimed that the truck was carrying plywood and denied the allegations.

The disagreement quickly intensified, leading to a confrontation between the groups. Police said members from both sides allegedly engaged in stone pelting and physical attacks during the unrest.

Police Use Force to Disperse Crowd

Security personnel were rushed to the location after receiving information about the disturbance. To prevent further escalation and restore order, police reportedly carried out a lathi charge to disperse the crowd gathered at the scene.

An MLA from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) also visited the area following the incident.

Speaking on the matter, officials from Asif Nagar Police stated that a case had been registered and an investigation was underway to determine the sequence of events and identify those involved in the violence.

Authorities said the situation was eventually brought under control, and additional security measures were deployed in the area to maintain peace.
