Diplomacy – Quad Foreign Ministers Set for Strategic Talks in New Delhi
Diplomacy – Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong will travel to India this week to attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and participate in a high-level bilateral dialogue aimed at expanding cooperation between Canberra and New Delhi.

Australia confirmed that Wong will join counterparts from India, Japan and the United States in New Delhi on May 26 for discussions focused on regional security, economic cooperation and shared strategic priorities in the Indo-Pacific. The meeting comes at a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty and increasing emphasis on multilateral partnerships across the region.
Quad Leaders to Discuss Regional Priorities
Ahead of the visit, Wong described the Quad grouping as an important platform for cooperation among democratic nations working to support peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. She noted that Australia, India, Japan and the United States continue to collaborate on several key areas, including maritime security, disaster response, infrastructure projects and resilient supply chains for critical minerals.
Officials said the ministers are expected to review ongoing Quad initiatives and assess recent developments affecting the Indo-Pacific region. The discussions will also cover broader international concerns linked to economic security, strategic technology and regional stability.
The upcoming meeting follows earlier talks held in Washington in July 2025, where Quad members reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific. Diplomats are expected to build on those conversations and identify new areas of practical cooperation.
Australia and India Deepen Bilateral Engagement
During her stay in India, Wong will also hold the 17th Australia-India Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. The annual dialogue is considered one of the most significant diplomatic mechanisms between the two countries.
Australian officials said relations between Canberra and New Delhi have strengthened considerably in recent years under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework. Both nations have expanded collaboration across trade, defence, maritime cooperation, renewable energy, education and emerging technologies.
The Australian government stated that social and cultural ties continue to play an important role in the broader partnership, especially through educational exchanges and growing people-to-people connections between the two countries.
Focus on Security and Economic Cooperation
The Quad foreign ministers are expected to exchange views on pressing regional developments and security challenges affecting the Indo-Pacific. Maritime safety, infrastructure investment and supply chain resilience remain central themes within the grouping as member nations seek closer coordination on strategic issues.
Analysts believe the meeting reflects the increasing importance of partnerships among Indo-Pacific democracies amid changing global dynamics. The forum has evolved beyond security discussions and now includes cooperation on climate initiatives, technological innovation and disaster preparedness.
India, which is hosting the meeting, continues to position itself as a key player in regional diplomacy. The participation of senior officials from all four countries highlights the growing relevance of the Quad framework in addressing emerging geopolitical and economic concerns.
High-Level Delegations to Attend New Delhi Meeting
Alongside Wong, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to attend the gathering in the Indian capital. The meeting has been organized at the invitation of India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Diplomatic observers expect the discussions to reinforce coordination among Quad nations at a time when countries across the Indo-Pacific are seeking stronger partnerships to manage regional challenges. The ministers are also likely to discuss ways to accelerate existing initiatives and improve collective responses to humanitarian emergencies and economic disruptions.
The New Delhi meeting is being closely watched internationally as the Quad continues to expand its diplomatic and strategic role in the region.
