Tamil Language – Dhanush Urges Students to Value Their Mother Tongue First
Tamil Language – Actor Dhanush has called on students to give greater importance to their mother tongue, stressing that fluency in Tamil should take priority before mastering any other language. Speaking at a school function in Chennai on Wednesday, the actor reflected on the noticeable shift in language habits among younger generations and encouraged students to stay connected with their linguistic roots.
Dhanush Highlights Changing Language Trends
During his interaction with students, Dhanush compared the present-day situation with his own school years. He recalled that when he was a student, speaking Tamil came naturally to most children, while English was often considered the more challenging language to learn. According to him, the trend has now reversed, with English becoming more common among youngsters and Tamil gradually losing its place in everyday conversations.
Sharing his personal observations, the actor said that a significant number of people he meets today struggle to communicate comfortably in Tamil. He described this change as a matter that deserves attention and urged students to recognize the importance of preserving their native language.
Mother Tongue Should Remain a Priority
Emphasising the value of cultural identity, Dhanush said that every individual should first become proficient in their mother tongue before focusing on other languages. He explained that learning international languages is beneficial, but it should never come at the cost of losing confidence in one’s native language.
The actor encouraged students to develop strong reading, writing, and speaking skills in Tamil, saying that language is closely tied to heritage, tradition, and personal identity. He reminded the audience that preserving a language also helps preserve the culture associated with it.

Dhanush also addressed the growing tendency among some people to openly admit they are not fluent in Tamil. He said such a statement should not be viewed as something to be proud of. Instead, he described it as a reminder of the need to reconnect with one’s linguistic background.
He urged students to make a conscious effort to improve their command of Tamil and encouraged schools and families to continue supporting language learning from an early age. His remarks received attention for highlighting the role of education in keeping regional languages alive.
