Naruto – Global Casting Begins for Lionsgate’s Live-Action Film Adaptation
Naruto – Lionsgate has started an international casting search for the upcoming live-action Naruto film, with the studio looking to cast the three central characters from the popular manga series: Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. The search will focus first on the members of Team 7, while auditions for additional roles are expected to be announced later.

Team 7 Takes Centre Stage in Casting Process
The project is based on Masashi Kishimoto’s long-running Naruto manga, which has developed a major global following over the years. The three lead characters form the heart of the story, making the casting process an important early step for the film’s production.
Naruto follows a young ninja who dreams of earning respect in his village and eventually becoming Hokage, the leader and protector of his community. Alongside Sasuke and Sakura, he trains under Team 7 as they face personal struggles, rivalries and dangerous missions.
Destin Daniel Cretton to Write and Direct
Destin Daniel Cretton has been appointed to write and direct the live-action adaptation. Cretton is known for directing Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and is also attached to the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Speaking about the project, Cretton said that Kishimoto’s work has influenced fans across generations and around the world. He described the opportunity to bring the Naruto universe to live-action cinema as an honour and said he was excited to begin the global search for actors who will portray Team 7.
The filmmaker’s involvement has drawn attention from fans who have closely followed the development of the Hollywood adaptation since it was first announced.
Masashi Kishimoto Shares His Excitement
Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto also reacted to the casting announcement, saying he was still amazed that his manga was being turned into a Hollywood feature film. He praised Cretton’s selection as director and expressed anticipation about seeing actors bring Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura to life on screen.
Kishimoto said he hopes the casting process leads to passionate performers who can capture the spirit of the characters. His comments reflect the importance of the film for the creator, whose manga has remained one of the most widely read Japanese series worldwide.
Lionsgate Announced Film in 2024
Lionsgate formally confirmed the live-action Naruto project in February 2024. Since then, details about the film have been limited, but the launch of the casting search indicates that the project is moving ahead.
The Naruto manga has sold more than 250 million copies across over 60 countries and territories, according to industry reports. Its success later expanded into anime adaptations, films, video games and merchandise, turning the franchise into a recognised name among international audiences.
The live-action film will mark the first time Naruto’s world is being adapted for a major Hollywood theatrical production. Further announcements about the cast, supporting characters and production schedule are expected as the project develops.
