Entertainment – John Rambo Prequel Set for Global Theatrical Release in 2027
Entertainment – Lionsgate has officially confirmed the release date for its upcoming action drama “John Rambo,” a film that will explore the early life of one of cinema’s most recognizable action heroes. The movie is scheduled to arrive in theatres worldwide on June 4, 2027, adding another chapter to the long-running Rambo franchise.

Origin Story Takes the Franchise Back in Time
Unlike previous installments, “John Rambo” will focus on events that occurred before the 1982 classic “First Blood.” The film is designed as an origin story, offering audiences a closer look at the experiences and circumstances that shaped the character before he became known for his survival skills and military expertise.
The original “First Blood” introduced viewers to John Rambo, a former United States Army Special Forces soldier struggling with the psychological effects of the Vietnam War. Over the years, the character became the centerpiece of a successful action series that explored themes of conflict, survival, and justice.
New Cast Brings Familiar Characters to the Screen
Actor Noah Centineo has been selected to portray the younger version of John Rambo, stepping into a role that was famously played by Sylvester Stallone for decades. Joining him is David Harbour, who will take on the role of Major Trautman, a key figure in Rambo’s military journey.
The supporting cast features several notable performers, including Yao, James Franco, Jason Tobin, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White, and Tayme Thapthimthong. Their involvement is expected to add depth to the story as it explores the formative years of the iconic character.
Creative Team Behind the Project
The film is being directed by Jalmari Helander, the filmmaker known for the action feature “Sisu.” The screenplay has been written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, who are tasked with bringing a fresh perspective to the established franchise while maintaining its core identity.
Production responsibilities are being handled by Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger, Angela Russo-Otstot, and Michael Disco. Meanwhile, Sylvester Stallone remains connected to the project as an executive producer, alongside Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Trevor Short, Dallas Sonnier, and Amanda Presmyk.
Competitive Summer Release Window
The release date places “John Rambo” in a highly competitive period for Hollywood studios. The film is expected to debut shortly before Sony’s animated feature “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” which is scheduled for June 11, 2027. Later in the month, Warner Bros. plans to launch its “Ocean’s” prequel film on June 25.
Industry observers will be watching closely to see how these major productions perform at the box office during the busy summer season.
Rambo Franchise Continues Its Legacy
Since its debut more than four decades ago, the Rambo series has become one of the most recognized action franchises in cinema. The collection of films includes “Rambo: First Blood Part II” (1985), “Rambo III” (1988), “Rambo” (2008), and “Rambo: Last Blood” (2019).
The new prequel aims to expand the franchise’s storytelling by exploring previously unseen aspects of John Rambo’s past, providing longtime fans and new audiences with a different perspective on the character.
Lionsgate Expands Upcoming Film Lineup
Beyond “John Rambo,” Lionsgate is preparing several other major releases. The studio’s upcoming schedule includes “Day Drinker,” featuring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz, as well as Mel Gibson’s “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One” and “The Housemaid’s Secret.”
Additionally, Lionsgate plans to bring “The Fall 2” and “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” to audiences later this year, highlighting an ambitious lineup of projects across multiple genres.
