Cinema – Biwi No. 1 Completes 27 Years Amid Ongoing Industry Dispute

Cinema – The 1999 comedy film Biwi No. 1 marked its 27th anniversary on Thursday, bringing back memories of one of Bollywood’s most successful commercial entertainers from the late 1990s. Actor and producer Jackky Bhagnani commemorated the occasion with an emotional social media post, recalling moments from his childhood spent on the film’s sets alongside his father, producer Vashu Bhagnani.

Biwi no 1 industry dispute 27years

Directed by David Dhawan and backed by Puja Films, the movie became widely popular for its light-hearted storytelling, music and star-studded cast. Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Anil Kapoor and Tabu played key roles in the film, which remains a familiar title among fans of family comedies even decades after its release.

Jackky Bhagnani Shares Personal Memories

Remembering the atmosphere during filming, Jackky Bhagnani described the experience of watching the cast and crew work together during his childhood years. In his tribute, he praised the performances delivered by the lead actors and credited the film for creating unforgettable entertainment moments for audiences across generations.

The producer’s post quickly gained attention online, with many fans revisiting scenes, songs and dialogues from the movie. Biwi No. 1 continues to enjoy popularity on television broadcasts and digital platforms, particularly among viewers who grew up watching 1990s Bollywood cinema.

Legal Conflict Surrounds Upcoming Film

The anniversary celebrations, however, arrive during a difficult period for Vashu Bhagnani and his production house. The producer is currently involved in a legal disagreement connected to the upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.

The dispute focuses on allegations concerning the recreation and use of songs linked to Bhagnani’s earlier productions. A lawsuit was reportedly filed in a Katihar court in Bihar against Tips Industries and parties associated with the new film. According to Bhagnani, certain intellectual property connected to older films, including Biwi No. 1, has been reused without proper authorization.

Producers Reject Allegations

On Wednesday, producer Ramesh Taurani, along with Tips Industries and the makers of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, issued a detailed statement denying all accusations. The team described the claims as baseless and alleged that the controversy was intended to disrupt the film’s scheduled release.

The statement also referred to the long professional relationship between the parties, mentioning their collaboration dating back to the 1995 release Coolie No. 1. According to the producers, their association with Bhagnani played an important role in several successful projects during that period.

The makers additionally questioned why the complaint had been filed in Bihar instead of Mumbai, where the Hindi film industry primarily operates. They maintained that direct discussions could have been pursued before initiating legal proceedings.

Disagreement Over Music Rights

At the centre of the matter are songs such as Chunnari Chunnari and Ishq Sona Hai. The producers behind Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai have asserted that they legally own the rights connected to the disputed tracks.

As the issue has now reached the courts, the parties involved have indicated that further public comments may remain limited. The legal proceedings are expected to determine whether any copyright or intellectual property violations have occurred.

Meanwhile, Vashu Bhagnani recently addressed the controversy during a press interaction. He expressed disappointment over the alleged recreation of songs connected to his earlier productions without prior communication. Bhagnani stated that the matter was not only financial but also emotional because of his long-standing personal and professional relationship with filmmaker David Dhawan.

Concerns Over Industry Ethics

Bhagnani also argued that the issue reflects a wider debate concerning ethics and creative ownership in the entertainment business. According to him, obtaining permission and maintaining transparency are essential practices when dealing with iconic songs and film content from earlier decades.

His legal representatives further stated that a court-issued status quo order currently applies to the music rights, songs and films mentioned in the case. The legal team claimed the order clearly covers the disputed material referenced in the lawsuit.

Trailer Release Continues Despite Controversy

Despite the ongoing court battle, the trailer of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai was released recently. The film stars Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, and marks another collaboration between David Dhawan and Varun Dhawan.

The trailer features comedy, romance and musical elements associated with David Dhawan’s filmmaking style. Several tracks from the film, including recreated versions of older songs, have already attracted significant attention online before the movie’s theatrical release.

Produced by Tips Films Ltd in collaboration with Maximilian Films UK, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is scheduled for a worldwide cinema release on June 5, 2026.
