AI Model –China’s artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI has temporarily stopped accepting new paid subscriptions for its recently introduced Kimi K3 model after an unexpected spike in user demand placed heavy pressure on its computing infrastructure. The company said the move is intended to ensure uninterrupted service for existing subscribers while additional capacity is brought online.

Demand Growth Pushes Infrastructure to Its Limits
In a statement shared through its official social media channels, Kimi AI said user interest over the past two days increased far more rapidly than expected. According to the company, the sharp rise in activity has brought its available computing resources close to maximum capacity. As a result, it has decided to temporarily halt new memberships until more infrastructure becomes available.
Moonshot AI emphasized that current subscribers will continue to receive uninterrupted access during this period. The company said it is directing available computing power toward existing members to maintain stable performance and avoid service disruptions.
Company Plans Phased Return of New Memberships
The startup also confirmed that work is underway to expand its computing resources as quickly as possible. Rather than reopening registrations all at once, Moonshot AI plans to restore access gradually by releasing new subscription slots in stages.
The phased approach is expected to help the company manage incoming demand more effectively while ensuring that system performance remains consistent. No specific timeline has been announced for when the first batch of new memberships will become available.
New Membership Structure Announced
Alongside the temporary subscription pause, Moonshot AI revealed plans to introduce two separate membership categories designed for different types of users.
Under the updated structure, one plan will focus on the Kimi web platform, mobile application and workplace tools, while a dedicated Kimi Code membership will cater specifically to software development and programming tasks. The company said separating these services will allow computing resources to be distributed more efficiently based on user requirements.
Moonshot AI believes the revised membership model will improve overall service stability while supporting growing demand across different use cases.
Kimi K3 Designed for Advanced AI Workloads
Kimi K3 is the latest flagship model developed by the Beijing-based startup. According to the company, the model contains 2.8 trillion parameters and supports a context window of one million tokens, enabling it to process and analyze large amounts of information within a single interaction.
Moonshot AI describes Kimi K3 as the first openly available AI model in the 3-trillion-parameter class. The system has been developed to handle complex reasoning, extensive coding projects and demanding knowledge-based tasks that require long-context understanding.
The company has made the model available through its Kimi website, workplace platform, coding service and API. At launch, Kimi K3 operates with its highest reasoning setting by default, while additional performance modes with different computing levels are expected to be introduced in future software updates.
Performance Claims and Upcoming Release Plans
Moonshot AI stated that internal testing shows Kimi K3 performs at a competitive level across a range of benchmark evaluations. However, the company acknowledged that the model currently trails leading systems such as Claude Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 SoI in overall performance.
The startup also confirmed that the complete model weights are scheduled for release by July 27, 2026, allowing broader access for researchers and developers interested in working with the technology.
The temporary suspension of new subscriptions reflects the growing global demand for advanced generative AI platforms and highlights the infrastructure challenges technology companies face as increasingly powerful models attract larger user bases.
