RoadSafety – A tragic road accident in Bihar’s Arwal district claimed the lives of four people and left another critically injured after a sport utility vehicle (SUV) lost balance and plunged into the Son canal during the early hours of Monday. The victims were reportedly returning to Patna after meeting a local legislator when the incident took place.
Accident Occurred During Late-Night Journey
According to police officials, the group had travelled from Amhara village, located under the Bihta police station limits in Patna district, to Arwal. While heading back home shortly after midnight, the vehicle reportedly went out of control at a sharp bend along the route. The SUV then swerved off the road and fell into the canal at around 12:15 a.m.
Driver Escaped and Alerted Villagers
Authorities said the driver managed to save himself by breaking a window of the submerged vehicle. After escaping, he immediately raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents. Local villagers rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts even before emergency teams arrived.
Victims Identified by Authorities
Police have identified three of the deceased as Rishank Kumar, Aman Kumar and Manoj Kumar. The identity of the fourth victim was not immediately confirmed and officials are working to complete the identification process.
Rohit Kumar, the only survivor of the accident, was pulled out of the canal by rescuers and local residents. He was later shifted to the Sadar Hospital for treatment. Medical officials said his condition remains critical and he is under close observation.
Rescue Operation Faced Challenges
Soon after receiving information about the accident, police personnel, administrative officers and trained divers reached the location. Rescue operations were launched immediately, but recovery work was slowed by poor visibility and the considerable depth of the canal.
Officials worked through difficult conditions to retrieve both the vehicle and the victims. The bodies were subsequently taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examinations as part of the legal procedure.
Investigation Underway
Police have started a detailed investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash. Preliminary findings indicate that loss of control at a sharp turn may have been the primary cause, though officials are examining all possible factors related to the incident.
