The contest attracted considerable political attention as leaders from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Jan Suraaj Party exchanged allegations throughout the day, adding to the intensity of the election atmosphere.
Low Voter Turnout Marks Bankipur By-Election
According to official figures released after voting ended, Bankipur registered a voter turnout of 34.30%, lower than participation levels recorded during several previous elections. Election authorities completed the polling process peacefully despite heightened political activity and close monitoring across polling stations.
The by-election became necessary after BJP state president Nitin Nabin vacated the Assembly seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha. Ahead of polling, Nabin campaigned extensively in the constituency, appealing to residents to support the BJP candidate with a decisive mandate.
Key Candidates in the Electoral Contest
The BJP nominated its youth wing leader Neeraj Kumar Sinha for the bypoll, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) once again fielded Rekha Gupta. The election gained additional significance after Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor entered the contest, making the race more competitive than in previous years.
Despite the increased political competition, the BJP entered the election with a strong electoral record in the constituency. The party has retained the Bankipur seat continuously since 1995 and secured a commanding 63% vote share during the 2025 Bihar Assembly election, with the RJD finishing well behind.
Voting Trend Compared With Previous Elections
Election Commission data indicates that voter participation this time remained below recent Assembly election figures. During the 2025 Bihar Assembly polls, Bankipur recorded a turnout of 40.97%. Earlier, the constituency witnessed 35.92% polling in 2020 and 40.25% in the 2015 Assembly election.
The latest figures suggest that voter engagement in the by-election fell short of the turnout recorded during the last full Assembly election, continuing a pattern often seen in bypolls where participation is generally lower.
Political Tension Before Polling Began
The hours leading up to voting saw political tensions escalate in Patna. Prashant Kishor visited the Jakkanpur police station after alleging that police had detained 16 supporters of his party. He claimed the action had been taken under pressure from the BJP, an allegation that became the subject of intense political debate.
A video showing a heated exchange between Kishor and the station house officer circulated widely across social media platforms, drawing significant public attention ahead of the polling process.
Meanwhile, BJP state general secretary Nitin Abhishek submitted a complaint to the Returning Officer, alleging that workers associated with the Jan Suraaj Party were attempting to cast fraudulent votes. Election authorities monitored the situation closely while ensuring that voting continued without disruption.
Datia By-Election in Madhya Pradesh Sees Strong Participation
Voting also took place for the Datia Assembly by-election in Madhya Pradesh, where polling reached 71.44%, according to official data. Although the turnout remained high, it was lower than the 80.2% recorded during the 2023 Assembly election.
The Datia contest features a three-way battle involving the Congress, the ruling BJP, and the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram). The seat gained prominence after the 2023 election, when Congress candidate Rajendra Bharti defeated former state Home Minister Narottam Mishra.
Election officials completed polling in both Bankipur and Datia under security arrangements, with counting of votes expected to determine the outcome of these closely watched by-elections.
