Supreme Court –The political battle between the two Shiv Sena factions intensified on Thursday as leaders from both camps exchanged sharp remarks while the Supreme Court continued hearing the long-running dispute over the party’s identity and election symbol.
The latest exchange began after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut expressed confidence that the legal proceedings would ultimately favour the faction led by former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Referring to the ongoing case before the Supreme Court, Raut stated that his party has consistently placed its faith in the Constitution and the judicial process since the split that reshaped Maharashtra politics in 2022.
Raut Expresses Confidence in Court Proceedings
In a post shared on social media platform X, Raut said he believed the legal process would bring a decisive outcome against the rival Shiv Sena faction headed by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. His post also featured an image of Shinde smiling, alongside his assertion that the dispute would reach its conclusion through lawful means.
The comments came as the Supreme Court continued hearing petitions filed by the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction challenging the Election Commission’s decision that recognised the Shinde-led group as the official Shiv Sena and awarded it the party’s traditional “bow-and-arrow” election symbol.
Rival Shiv Sena Responds to Remarks
Reacting strongly to Raut’s statement, Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Naresh Mhaske criticised the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader through a post on X. Mhaske alleged that the rival faction often questions the judiciary whenever court decisions do not go in its favour. He also claimed that the political strength of the Thackeray-led group had already diminished, responding directly to Raut’s comments with a sharp political rebuttal.
The exchange highlighted the continuing political tensions between the two camps even as the matter remains under judicial consideration.
Supreme Court Examines Key Constitutional Issues
The Supreme Court began the final phase of hearings in the case on Wednesday, examining challenges to the Election Commission’s decision regarding the recognition of the Shiv Sena following the party split.
During the proceedings, the court observed that a recognised political party generally retains authority over its legislative wing and that legitimate decisions taken by the party should ordinarily be respected. At the same time, the bench also noted that elected representatives should have a reasonable degree of flexibility when a substantial majority genuinely disagrees with the party’s official position on political matters.
These observations form part of the wider constitutional questions being examined in a case that could have long-term implications for disputes involving political parties and legislative groups.

The legal dispute traces its roots to the dramatic political developments of 2022, when Eknath Shinde led a rebellion against the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray, resulting in a split within the Shiv Sena, the party established by Bal Thackeray.
Following the split, the Election Commission recognised the Shinde-led faction as the official Shiv Sena and allotted it the party’s iconic “bow-and-arrow” election symbol. The Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) subsequently challenged that decision before the Supreme Court, arguing that the recognition was not legally justified.
