Education – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of choosing political outreach over parliamentary participation, alleging that he was attempting to gain political advantage from student-related issues instead of raising them during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. The remarks came after Rahul Gandhi’s planned interaction with students in Prayagraj was cancelled following the withdrawal of permission for the event.
Prayagraj Programme Cancelled After Venue Permission Revoked
Rahul Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was scheduled to participate in the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme at KP Ground in Prayagraj on August 8. During the event, he was expected to interact with students over concerns related to alleged examination paper leaks and other issues affecting the education sector.
However, the Kayastha Pathshala Trust, which manages the venue, cancelled the permission granted for the programme. The trust cited an Allahabad High Court order along with waterlogging at the venue as the reasons behind its decision, making it impossible to host the gathering as originally planned.
BJP Questions Congress Leader’s Parliamentary Participation
Speaking to journalists inside the Parliament House complex, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh criticised Rahul Gandhi for not prioritising debates inside Parliament while the Monsoon Session is underway.
According to Chugh, Parliament remains the country’s highest democratic institution where national issues should be discussed. He argued that avoiding debates in the House while addressing public meetings reflected a preference for political messaging over parliamentary responsibility. Chugh further alleged that Congress was reluctant to participate in discussions because it lacked convincing arguments on key issues and claimed that its political narrative would face scrutiny during debates.
Allegations Over Student Protests
The BJP leader also accused the Congress of attempting to use student protests for political benefit instead of addressing the concerns consistently across states where the party is part of governing alliances.
Chugh alleged that while students have been voicing genuine concerns regarding examinations and education, the Congress leadership was selectively engaging with these issues for political purposes. He claimed the party was trying to associate itself with student movements whenever it saw electoral advantage, while overlooking similar concerns in states where it shares power.
Congress Continues Campaign on Examination Issues
The Congress has consistently criticised the central government over alleged examination irregularities and repeated incidents of paper leaks in recent years. Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly raised concerns about the impact of such incidents on students preparing for competitive examinations and has sought greater interaction with young people to understand their grievances.
The proposed Prayagraj event was part of that outreach effort, with discussions expected to focus on examination transparency, recruitment processes and challenges faced by students. Although the programme has now been cancelled due to venue-related reasons, the political exchange between the BJP and the Congress over student issues continues during the ongoing Parliament session.
The latest developments have once again brought education reforms, examination integrity and political accountability into the national spotlight, with both parties presenting sharply different views on how these concerns should be addressed.
