Investigation – Congress Supporters Observe Bandh in Chikkaballapur Over Cabinet Exclusion
Investigation –Supporters of Congress MLA SN Subbareddy staged a bandh across parts of Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district on Wednesday, expressing their dissatisfaction after the senior legislator was not included in the recently expanded state cabinet. The protest affected normal business activity in several areas as party workers appealed to local traders to keep their establishments closed in support of their demand.
Protest Focuses on Cabinet Representation
SN Subbareddy, who represents the Bagepalli Assembly constituency, has long been regarded by his supporters as a senior Congress leader deserving of a ministerial berth. Following the announcement of the cabinet expansion, his exclusion prompted party workers and supporters to organise demonstrations in the Bagepalli, Gudibande and Chelur taluks.
Protesters gathered at multiple locations, requesting shopkeepers to voluntarily participate in the bandh. While many businesses remained closed in response to the appeal, commercial operations were disrupted in several parts of the district throughout the day.
Supporters Seek Review of Decision
Those participating in the demonstrations urged the Congress leadership, both at the state and national levels, to reconsider the cabinet appointments. According to the protesters, Subbareddy’s political experience and electoral record justified his inclusion in the state ministry. They maintained that the leadership should revisit its decision and provide him with an opportunity to serve in the cabinet.
The demonstrations remained focused on highlighting the demand for political representation rather than raising any other issues linked to the cabinet reshuffle.
Security Tightened Across Affected Areas
Anticipating public gatherings, authorities deployed additional police personnel across the three affected taluks to maintain law and order. Security arrangements were strengthened at key locations, and precautionary measures were put in place to ensure that the protests remained peaceful.
Officials from the district administration, along with the police, continued to monitor developments throughout the day and kept a close watch on the situation to prevent any untoward incidents.
Gayathri Shanthegowda Responds to Cabinet Omission
The cabinet expansion also generated discussion after Congress leader Gayathri Shanthegowda responded calmly to reports surrounding her exclusion. Her name had reportedly appeared in an initial list of likely ministers before being removed from a revised version released shortly afterward.
Speaking to ANI, Shanthegowda said she remained committed to the party and would abide by its decisions. Describing herself as a loyal grassroots worker, she refrained from expressing disappointment and reiterated her faith in the organisation’s leadership.
She had drawn attention because she was reportedly the only woman leader included in the preliminary list before the final announcement excluded her from the cabinet.
Senior Leaders Also Miss Out on Cabinet Berths
Subbareddy was not the only senior Congress figure left out during the expansion. Several experienced leaders, including HK Patil, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Lakshmi Hebbalkar, Shivanand Patil, RB Thimmapur, RV Deshpande, K Venkatesh, Krishnappa, Tanveer Sait, Appaji Nadagouda and HC Mahadevappa, also did not secure ministerial positions.
Many of these leaders have previously held cabinet portfolios in earlier Congress governments and were widely viewed as strong contenders for inclusion. Their absence from the final list has sparked internal political discussions over how factors such as seniority, regional balance and community representation were considered while finalising the expanded ministry.
The latest cabinet expansion has therefore led to visible dissatisfaction among sections of the Congress organisation, with supporters of several leaders hoping the party leadership will address their concerns in the coming days.
