TerrorAttack – Two migrant workers lost their lives after they were shot by suspected terrorists in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday evening, adding to concerns over the safety of non-local labourers working in the region.
The victims were attacked in the Kelam area of Kulgam, where suspected terrorists opened fire on them. Officials identified the deceased as 24-year-old Deepak Ratray and 28-year-old Bopinder, both residents of Chhattisgarh who had travelled to Jammu and Kashmir for work. The incident has once again highlighted the security challenges faced by migrant workers in the Valley.
Victims Succumbed to Their Injuries
According to officials, both labourers suffered serious gunshot wounds during the attack. Deepak Ratray died before he could be shifted to a medical facility. Bopinder was first admitted to the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Anantnag for emergency treatment. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar’s Soura area. Despite medical efforts, he later died while undergoing treatment.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, while security personnel intensified search operations in and around the area to trace those responsible.
Series of Recent Terror Incidents Raises Concern
The latest killings come shortly after another deadly incident in south Kashmir. Less than ten days earlier, a police officer was allegedly shot dead by terrorists in Anantnag town, reflecting a renewed pattern of targeted attacks in the region.
Security agencies remain on alert as they continue operations aimed at preventing further violence and maintaining law and order. Officials are closely monitoring the situation following the latest incident.
Previous Attacks on Non-Local Workers
This is not the first time migrant workers have been targeted in Jammu and Kashmir. Similar attacks have taken place in recent years, raising concerns about the security of labourers who travel from different states for employment.
On February 7, 2024, two workers from Punjab, Amritpal Singh and Rohit Masih, were shot dead by a terrorist in the Shaheed Gunj area of Srinagar. That incident drew widespread condemnation and prompted enhanced security measures for non-local workers.
Another attack in 2024 also resulted in the deaths of two labourers in Srinagar, underscoring the continuing threat posed by militant violence against civilians.
Leaders Condemn the Killings
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha strongly condemned the attack and instructed security agencies to intensify anti-terror operations. He directed the forces to take firm action against those involved and continue efforts to eliminate terrorist networks operating in the region.
Political leaders also expressed grief over the loss of lives. People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti described the killings as “unimaginably cruel,” condemning the targeting of innocent workers and expressing sympathy for the bereaved families.
The latest incident has once again drawn attention to the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the vulnerability of migrant workers who contribute to the region’s economy. Investigations are continuing as authorities work to identify the attackers and prevent further acts of violence.
