Floods – Assam Flood Crisis Continues as Over Two Lakh People Remain Affected

Floods -More than 2.12 lakh people continue to face severe hardship as floodwaters persist across several parts of Assam, with the overall flood-related death toll this season climbing to 80. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), eight districts remain affected, while authorities are maintaining relief efforts and keeping a close watch on rising river levels.

Over Two Lakh Residents Still Facing Flood Impact

The latest assessment released by ASDMA shows that 2,12,441 people are currently affected across the districts of Golaghat, Sivasagar, Biswanath, Charaideo, Kamrup (Metro), Jorhat, Dhemaji and Nagaon. Floodwaters continue to disrupt daily life, leaving thousands of families dependent on government assistance as several villages remain inundated.

The disaster has spread across 437 villages located within 21 revenue circles, highlighting the widespread nature of the flooding. Officials said the situation remains challenging despite ongoing rescue and rehabilitation measures in the affected regions.

Agricultural Losses Continue to Mount

Flooding has also caused extensive damage to agriculture, with nearly 17,198 hectares of farmland remaining underwater. Large stretches of cultivated land have been submerged, raising concerns over crop losses and the financial impact on farming communities that rely on seasonal harvests for their livelihoods.

Agriculture officials are expected to carry out detailed damage assessments once water levels begin to recede. The flooding is likely to have long-term consequences for rural households already coping with repeated monsoon-related disasters.

Death Toll Reaches 80 After Fresh Casualties

ASDMA confirmed that two additional flood-related deaths were reported from Sivasagar district during the past 24 hours. With these fatalities, the cumulative death toll linked to this year’s floods in Assam has increased to 80.

Officials continue to monitor vulnerable locations where water levels remain high, while emergency response teams are working to minimise further loss of life. Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to remain cautious and cooperate with local authorities.

Relief Operations Continue Across Affected Districts

The state government, along with district administrations, has continued relief and rescue operations in flood-hit areas. Twenty-one relief camps are currently functioning to provide temporary shelter for displaced families.

Authorities said food, safe drinking water, medicines and other essential supplies are being distributed to those staying in relief camps and other affected communities. Rescue teams remain on standby to respond to any emergency as weather conditions evolve.

Urban Flooding Persists in Kamrup Metropolitan

Apart from river flooding, waterlogging continues to create problems in parts of Kamrup Metropolitan district. Officials reported that Padumbari and the Tetelia-Boragaon Service Lane remain affected, with stagnant water disrupting normal movement and daily activities.

Civic agencies are continuing efforts to improve drainage and reduce water accumulation in these urban areas, although the situation remains difficult in low-lying locations.

Advisory Issued for Dhansiri River

ASDMA has also issued a public advisory asking residents to stay away from the Dhansiri (South) River after its water level continued to rise at Numaligarh in Golaghat district.

Disaster management authorities cautioned that people should avoid approaching the river until conditions improve, as increasing water levels may pose safety risks. The advisory forms part of precautionary measures aimed at preventing further casualties during the ongoing flood situation.

Authorities Maintain Vigil Across Vulnerable Areas

Government officials said river levels in several parts of Assam continue to remain high, prompting close monitoring by disaster management teams and district administrations. Surveillance has been intensified in vulnerable locations to ensure timely response if conditions worsen.

People living in low-lying regions and settlements along riverbanks have been advised to stay alert, monitor official updates and follow instructions issued by district authorities. Officials said continued public cooperation remains essential as flood response operations progress across the state.
