DelhiPolice – Rahul Gandhi Faces Questions After Remark on Injured Officers’ Families
DelhiPolice – Families of Delhi Police personnel injured during the July 20 student march have sought justice and urged authorities to address their concerns while the political debate over the incident continues.

The families of Delhi Police personnel who were injured during the July 20 student march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament addressed the media on Friday, sharing the difficulties they have faced since the violence. They described the emotional and financial challenges experienced by their households and appealed for justice, saying their concerns deserve equal attention alongside the wider discussion surrounding the protests.
Rahul Gandhi Responds to Media Query
Later in the day, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was approached by journalists within the Parliament complex for his reaction to the press conference. When asked about the grievances expressed by the families of the injured police personnel, he responded by asking the reporter, “Are you from the BJP?” The brief exchange quickly drew public attention and became a topic of political discussion.
Families Seek Recognition and Justice
During their interaction with the media, relatives of the injured officers said they were disappointed that the suffering of police personnel had not received adequate recognition. They questioned why the focus had largely remained on those participating in the demonstrations while the hardships faced by injured officers and their families were receiving limited attention. They also called for accountability for those responsible for the violence and urged authorities to ensure justice for the affected personnel.
Violence During the July 20 March
According to reports, the July 20 “Sansad Chalo” march turned violent after clashes broke out between protesters and police. More than 200 Delhi Police personnel were reportedly injured, with several sustaining serious injuries. Authorities stated that the unrest included stone-pelting and attacks on police officers. Reports further claimed that some individuals involved in the violence had criminal backgrounds and had infiltrated the demonstration, contributing to the escalation of the situation.
Political Reactions Intensify
The incident has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. Opposition leaders alleged that the government was attempting to create a conflict between students and the police in order to divert attention from the handling of the protests. The ruling party, however, rejected those claims and accused the Opposition of overlooking the sacrifices and hardships faced by law enforcement personnel.
BJP Calls for Sensitivity Toward Police Personnel
Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the injuries suffered by police personnel should be treated with seriousness and compassion. Speaking to reporters, he emphasized that police officers also have families and deserve the same concern and respect as any other citizens. He added that attacks on security personnel cannot be ignored, regardless of the circumstances surrounding a protest.
Prasad also stated that while peaceful demonstrations are a democratic right and young people should be respected, any involvement of individuals engaged in violence or criminal activities raises significant concerns. He stressed that if criminal elements participate in protests and target police personnel, the matter requires a thorough investigation and appropriate legal action.
The developments have intensified the political debate over the July 20 violence, with both the government and the Opposition continuing to defend their respective positions. Meanwhile, the families of the injured police personnel maintain that their primary demand is justice, recognition of their suffering, and accountability for those responsible for the attacks.
